Here he was thinking the well groomed lawyer was siding with him merely for the pay to come, but this opened something else for him. “ Mr. Atticus, sir” said Tom, “Even though I’m probably off to jail, I want you know you did your best, and if I ever get out. I’ll remember you, sir.” Atticus smiled gingerly “It was my honor, sir” The doors thundered open, and the court room fell quiet. After hearing both sides of the story, the judge ruled guilty, and sentenced to life in jail. Tom handed Atticus a strange looking lockette. “Give this to my wife, she’ll need it, and thank you again, Atticus” Tears stinged Atticus’ eyes. “You’re welcome sir, and I will, I promise.” And like that, the police came in and took Tom Robinson away, and with him, a piece of Atticus’ nice, kindly, warm-hearted…

The protagonist Atticus Finch is placed on a trial of which he has to defend a black man, Tom Robinson, during a time where black people were seen as separate from white people. Atticus takes this trial, and instead of not caring, he defends Tom as if he were any other client. Throughout the rising action of the novel, Atticus shows how great of a man he is because even though everyone in town is treating him differently, he stays true to himself and defends Tom Robinson with all that he can. In the climax of the novel, Tom is proven guilty, however, the jury took a very long time to come to this verdict, which shows that Atticus did have an impact, if only ever so small, he still pushed them to see Tom's side of the story a little. Since Atticus was in his integrity, people had more respect for him, and saw that he did not conform to society. He is a perfect example of how difficulties bring out the great side of…

Scout learns that certain people in town are feared, distrusted or hated because of their skin color, personal decisions, or rank on the social hierarchy, also known as class warfare. Colored people don’t receive as much respect as white people because they are lower in the social hierarchy than the white people who are on the top. By stepping into the shoes of Boo Radley, Walter Cunningham, and Dolphus Raymond, Scout learns a lot about class warfare. Tom Robinson is a black man who is falsely accused of beating and raping Mayella Ewell. The jury finds him guilty, and Scout knows that it was wrong. Her father, Atticus, was Tom’s lawyer, so she was able to experience each step of the trial. Arthur “Boo” Radley was feared by all of Maycomb because he stabbed his father with a pair of scissors when he was younger. Scout constantly wonders what it would feel like to be trapped in your house for so many years and be all alone to understand why Boo does not have great social skills and is quite shy. He left many things for the children in the hole of a tree, but expected nothing in return. Scout and Jem both recognized that he was not a bad man, and just needed some friends. Dolphus Raymond was the town dunk. Actually, he wasn’t. He drank Coca-Cola out of a paper bag to make everyone think that he was drunk. Dill and Scout got the opportunity to talk to him during the trail, when they decided to take a…

This case brings up mainly the issue of race but also shows how the community is divided between the traditional south and the future of the south. People like Miss Dubose and Miss Merriweather are stuck in the old south, while people like Atticus and his children; bring forward new racial ideas about equality. Atticus forces people to be accountable for their decisions. This is best exemplified through the lynch mob. Atticus goes to the jail that night is to protect Tom Robinson so the mob does not kill him. This is illustrated through their disguise of “cold” weather clothing and drunken state. This clan of men represents the opinion of the community about the trial. These planned racist actions are averted by Scout’s innocent questioning. Scout picks a man out of the mob and isolates him by calling on him, which makes Mr. Cunningham realize his erroneous actions. She starts to talk about his son, Walter, and his entailment and this causes Mr. Cunningham to empathize with Atticus. Mr. Cunningham realizes that Atticus is helping Tom just like Atticus is helping him. In this realization, the mob departs. This later affects the verdict of the jury because a Cunningham is left to make a decision. This is a sign for a possible change. Mr. Cunningham and the citizens are affected by Atticus’s decision to defend a black…

It was cool and breezy November morning in Maycomb. The last of the leafs had just fallen off of the trees. The year was 1951. There was a large crowd around the old oak tree in the cemetery, looking down at the casket. The casket belonged to Atticus Finch. Atticus was the greatest father anyone could ask for. Jem was standing at the head of the casket with his expecting wife Lisa. He put his warm and soft hand on the casket and looked at the sky. He suddenly felt someone touch his back lightly, it was Scout. He turned around and hugged each other for what felt like forever. Soon, many other people joined around Jem and Scout and murmured different things about how great of a man Atticus was. He was the most respected man in all of Maycomb. Jem and Scout tried to look at the positive things about Atticus. Dill wrapped his arms around Scout, which the two married only three months before Atticus’s death. The family of Tom Robinson showed up and Tom’s wife spoke very softly about how Atticus was the greatest man to ever step foot in Maycomb. This made Jem very proud because he took up just like his father and became a lawyer. Scout became a school teacher, and she teaches the 1st grade. Dill works at a Wood Mill in Maycomb. This was a new addition to Maycomb; it was built only six years ago. Miss Maudie handed Jem and Scout the will that he wrote. The will gave Jem and his wife the house that he grew up in. It also listed for Jem to have Atticus’s pocket watch. Next it was Scouts turn. Scout got Atticus’s car. There was a spot for Boo Radley. Unfortunately, he died three weeks before Atticus did. The sun was beginning to set in the distance, and they started to lower Atticus’s casket into the ground. As if began to lower, three tears suddenly fell onto the casket. The tears belonged to Jem, Scout, and Dill. As the casket finally fell into its stopping point, Scout reached down and grabbed a handful of dirt, she tossed it…

Shirley Jackson has combined the convention of symbolism into ‘The Lottery’ to create a deep and more profound meaning. The black box a symbol/ icon used in the story is an old, worn, well used box. This box is an important feature of the villagers’ annual tradition. For example, “Mr Summers spoke frequently to the villagers about making a new box, but no one liked to upset even as much tradition as was represented by the black box”. The box is so important that the people are too frightened to renew the box in case the tradition is lost, even though the meaning has already gone. The reader infers that the colour of the box, which is black, is to allow them to easily depict the idea of death, as the colour black usually correlates with death. The black box is symbolic of a coffin as they both are a form of a box. The black box is described in detail. “The black box grew shabbier each year, by now it was no longer completely black but splintered badly along one side to show the original wood colour, and in some…

The fact that the ‘paraphernalia for the lottery had been lost long ago’ suggests that this ritual holds significant power within the village. The lottery’s importance is further demonstrated by the metaphorical ‘black box’, which represents death and hence foreshadows the dark outcome at the end. The ‘three legged stool’ that holds the box ironically alludes to the Christian Trinity as the latter represents purity and holiness, thus conveying how the power of tradition can fool people into behaving in an inhuman manner. The villagers’ regressive mindset is exemplified through Old Man Warner, who argued that quitting the lottery is ‘nothing but trouble’. The apathetic and complacent nature of the crowd is also shown through their swiftness with which they turn against Tessie when she was marked by the symbolic ‘black dot’. Even her husband ended up participating in the stoning, exposing the danger of conforming to social expectations as he went from joking with his wife to ‘forcing the slip of paper out of her hand’. Although family ties form the lottery’s basic structure, these relationships mean nothing against old customs. The Lottery therefore serves as a didactic tale, an indirect warning to societies ruled by outdated…
