The story takes place in England in the late 19th century where poverty and recession are prevalent. People struggle to make ends meet and businesses are not doing well. The Fred family is renowned in the city of London because the father is a rich merchant of fabric and his beloved wife is known for her generosity and gentleness of her heart. After his wife’s death, things are going from bad to worse for Fred.
Fred’s wife died while giving birth to a beautiful girl called Ann. She was the spitting image of her mother and has her kind heart. Ann has blond hair like her mother and big blue eyes. She has a beautiful face and lovely white teeth. The difference between her and her mother was that Ann may be sometimes stubborn and outspoken which is not considered ladylike at that time. Seeing growing his daughter put Fred a smile on his face. He loves his daughter very much and continued to work for her sake.
Fred lost a great deal of money in business and had to borrow money in order to assure his shipment of fabric. This same ship wrecked in the sea and he ended up owing money to a lot of people. Fred saw his luck run out and to save his family, he promised to marry his daughter to Harry, the son of a wealthy merchant. At the age of 70, Fred’ health deteriorates and all the worries and stress doesn’t help him. His daughter took good care of him but one month later Fred died leaving his only family penniless and in debt. Harry went back on his promise when her father died a broken man and turned Ann out on to the street.
Ann is outside in the cold, when luckily she met her old neighbour Rosina May. The lovely brunette, Rosina is a handicapped girl who went to live with her brother in a village at the death of her parents to be taken care.
