The book I have chosen is “The Borrowers” by Mary Norton.
The story begins with an old Mrs. Mays telling a young girl Kate about a family of “borrowers”, that her younger brother claimed to have seen many years ago. She is not quite sure if the story is true or if it was just one of her brother’s imaginings.
Supposedly, Borrowers are tiny people who “borrow” things they need to survive from the “human beans”. The story all took place in London, in the country at Mrs. Mays Great-Aunt Sophy’s house many years earlier.
A 14 year old girl borrower named Arrietty Clock lived with her father, Pod, and her mother, Homily under the floorboards in the kitchen of Great Aunt Sophy‘s house. There used to be many families of Borrowers living in the house. There where the Overmantels, the Harpsichords and the Broom-Cupboards, just to name a few.
Although, when the story starts, those other families have all gone. Most of them in search of somewhere a bit safer.
So, that just left Arrietty and her parents living a rather lonely life, locked away behind the gates that Pod had built to keep them safe from danger. The most obvious dangers were rats and cats, but the worst thing of all, was to be “seen”. That’s just what happened to Pod, while borrowing a toy teacup for Homily one day. He was seen by a boy, (Mrs. Mays’ brother) who had been sent from India to live with his great-aunt while recovering from rheumatic fever.
Days later, Pod took Arrietty borrowing for the first time in her life. Arrietty wanders outside where she met the Boy. Pod discovered Arrietty talking to the Boy and took her home. Pod and Homily were frightened because the Boy would probably figure out where they lived. They turned out to be right. But the Boy, instead of wanting to harm them, brought them gifts of dollhouse furniture from the nursery.
(AND THAT IS THE SCENE I HAVE CREATED)
