The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
In the novel The Boy in Striped Pajamas’ by John Boyne an interesting character is Bruno, he is interesting because he models and provides the solution to how the holocaust could have been prevented. He models the exact behaviors that we should exhibit if we wish for an event as horrific as this to never occur again. The author uses the naivety of Bruno’s voice to question both the rationality and morality of what is happening around him.
Bruno challenges and questions what he is taught and doesn’t allow himself to be indoctrinated. This is shown when Bruno is curious to find things out for himself. Bruno is uncertain about the holocaust and remains innocent throughout the story but this doesn’t stop him from questioning and trying to find out more. He says to his sister ‘then where are all the animals were talking about’ this proves that he uses his logical mind to make decisions for himself, we are also shown this from the quote ‘Bruno started to think more about the two sides of the fence and the reason it was there in the first place’. Bruno is curious to find out what is behind the fence, he keeps questioning Gretel and uses theoretical thinking to challenge his sister. In Bruno’s questioning we understand the truth which is infuriating but more clearly it shows the truth of the holocaust to us.
Bruno starts to develop feelings and empathy for people around him when others are only able to worry about themselves. Bruno begins to acknowledge people like Maria and Pavel for who he would not use to care for. We are told this in the text when Bruno says ‘for the first time he looked across at Maria and realized that he had never really considered her to be a person’. This is proving the fact that Bruno is not seeing things through the eyes of a Nazi boy but as a curious boy. He is different to the rest of Germany. Bruno is presented to us as a normal human boy who to makes mistakes, however he exemplifies the correct response required when we make a mistake,

    How can two best friends simultaneously be enemies? John Boyne answers this question in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. He writes a tale about a Nazi commandant’s son who befriends another boy. They soon become best friends. Everyday Bruno the commandant’s son, visits Shmuel, a concentration camp inmate. Since Bruno’s father works for Hitler and Shmuel and his family are trapped by Hitler, this makes things difficult on the boys. Instead of being able to play with each other, like Bruno wants, they are separated by a fence. Bruno and Shmuel have these secret meetings every day and Bruno’s mother is also having secret meetings. However, her meetings are with the young lieutenant who works for Hitler.     The main themes of the movie that stand out the most but are certainly not limited to is, innocent and complicity. Though he attends school and his father is a high ranking Nazi official, Bruno is mostly ignorant of the political situation at the time.     Both the historical pieces by Jane Yolen who wrote The Devil's Arithmetic and John Boyne who created The Boy in the Striped Pajamas use the power of relationships between characters to transfer the message about the Holocaust and the barbaric nature of the events. The connection between the characters is shown on page 159 in Yolen's book when the protagonist states, “ Run for your life Rivka. Run for your future. Run. Run. Run.     The holocaust, an event that has been debated upon for many years, lead to the death of millions of innocent people. It was an incident that was planed quite well, secretly. Evil people, you might call them, who do not deserve to be remembered. How is it that a countless number of people were involved in the holocaust and barely any people attempted to put a stop to it? Can an entire society be anti-Semitic? Can an entire society coincidentally be that ignorant? But really, it is these people that we must remember so that a massive destructive event like the Holocaust does not occur ever again in history. Susan Griffin’s essay Our Secret looks at the minds of various people, focusing the most on Heinrich Himmler. It is hard to deny that he is an awful man for what he did, but it is so easy for people to simply judge without knowing the facts behind his madness.
