The boy in the stripped pyjamas
In ‘Boy in Striped Pyjamas’ many characters are puppets on a string, Do you agree?
Many characters in the boy in striped pyjamas were puppets on a string, German’s were made to believe that the Jewish people were terrible people and evil. The German soldiers were completely brainwashed and in the novel we see the German people telling the children that the Jewish were bad people.

The father of Bruno and Gretel is a Military Commandant. He and his family were re-located out of Berlin and into Poland right outside a concentration camp because of his promotion. He is always out or in his office that no one is allowed in. He does not spend much time with his family and his work takes up most of his time. Hitler controls him because Hitler is the boss of him and if he doesn’t obey his orders he could be sent to Prison or even worse. DEATH! In the story his family sees the true side of him when Pavel drops the bottle and he get Lieutenant Kotler to bash him.

Shmuel is a nine year old Jewish boy that is from Poland, he is very confuse on where he is and what he is doing in the concentration camp. He is stuck with hundreds of other families in this camp and has nothing for himself. Him and Bruno share the same birthday and they have a lot of things in common. Bruno was on one of his adventures he stumbled upon Shmuel and they became friends. Bruno took food to him and they talked and kept each other company. Shmuel is one of the prisoners and has no power. He is a slave and he comes into Brunos house to clean the glasses because they wanted someone with small fingers. While he was there Bruno gave him something to eat, Shmuel takes it and starts to scoff it down but then lieutenant Kotler comes in and says 'You have been eating, Did you steal something from that fridge?' Bruno replied 'No, sir. He gave it to me, tears welling up in his eyes as he threw a sideways glance at Bruno. 'He's my friend' Kotler then says 'Your...? 'What do you mean he's your friend?

    It is hard for someone to fully immerse themselves into a movie when they have to suspend so much belief in the story. Although Bruno and Shmuel are both only eight, it is hard to believe that they would be as clueless as to what is happening. Shmuel lived in the concentration camp and seemed to have no idea what was going on inside it. It is also hard to believe that Bruno, being as curious as he is, would not have tried eavesdropping on his father’s meetings. It is also convenient that none of the guards ever caught them sitting by the fence or that, Bruno’s mother did not notice that he has been disappearing every day.     John Boyne represents the different perspectives of society in World War II through the representations of characters in the fictional novel The Boy in Striped Pyjamas. Bruno’s childlike perspective is represented through his malapropism of “the Fury” and “Out-With” and his reaction to unexpected events, “mouth making the shape of an O”. The irony of Bruno’s narrow view, “it’s so unfair...” confronts the audience with the ignorance of some German citizens to the horrific events of the Holocaust. The characters of “Mother” and “Grandmother” are utilised by Boyne to represent the differing perspectives of the society during the Holocaust. Grandmother exercises constructive disobedience in dissenting with the Nazi regime and perceiving Fathers role as “a puppet on a string”. This is juxtaposed to Bruno's Mother through the euphemism of "[Bruno] had never known anyone to need quite so many medicinal Sherries" showing her complacency to do nothing about the knowledge of the concentration camp.     There are many quotes in the book ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ that show how the Jews were treated under Nazi control, through Bruno’s friend from the other side of the fence. However, the author does this in a clever and unique way; through his clothes. An example of this is found on page one hundred and six in chapter ten, where Shmuel “wore the same striped pyjamas that all the other people on that side of the fence wore, and a striped clothed cap on his head.” This tells the reader that he is not seen as an individual at the concentration camp, but as part of a group with no personal identity as he is identical to everyone else. In the book The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne he writes about a Jewish boy named Shmuel and a German boy named Bruno.     This means that he is still innocent and naïve and, as a result, there are many things that are implied rather than stated outright because Bruno cannot comprehend the true atrocities being committed.     At the time of war, Bruno was completely oblivious to the atrocities around him. He is unaware that his father his a Nazi Commander. This relates to Zusak’s The Book Thief since Bruno does not know that his father is a Nazi Commander and he would be too young to understand, and Liesel’s parents were communists, a concept she didn’t understand either because of her age, so they were both in danger. Bruno says: “My father’s a soldier, but not one that takes peoples clothes away”. (Boyne, 114).
