Many characters in the boy in striped pyjamas were puppets on a string, German’s were made to believe that the Jewish people were terrible people and evil. The German soldiers were completely brainwashed and in the novel we see the German people telling the children that the Jewish were bad people.
The father of Bruno and Gretel is a Military Commandant. He and his family were re-located out of Berlin and into Poland right outside a concentration camp because of his promotion. He is always out or in his office that no one is allowed in. He does not spend much time with his family and his work takes up most of his time. Hitler controls him because Hitler is the boss of him and if he doesn’t obey his orders he could be sent to Prison or even worse. DEATH! In the story his family sees the true side of him when Pavel drops the bottle and he get Lieutenant Kotler to bash him.
Shmuel is a nine year old Jewish boy that is from Poland, he is very confuse on where he is and what he is doing in the concentration camp. He is stuck with hundreds of other families in this camp and has nothing for himself. Him and Bruno share the same birthday and they have a lot of things in common. Bruno was on one of his adventures he stumbled upon Shmuel and they became friends. Bruno took food to him and they talked and kept each other company. Shmuel is one of the prisoners and has no power. He is a slave and he comes into Brunos house to clean the glasses because they wanted someone with small fingers. While he was there Bruno gave him something to eat, Shmuel takes it and starts to scoff it down but then lieutenant Kotler comes in and says 'You have been eating, Did you steal something from that fridge?' Bruno replied 'No, sir. He gave it to me, tears welling up in his eyes as he threw a sideways glance at Bruno. 'He's my friend' Kotler then says 'Your...? 'What do you mean he's your friend?
