Comparing both The Brave New World and North America today to prove the Brave New World of being a utopian society while North America is a dystopian society. At the beginning of the book, conditioning was being used to make the people within the society approve of their caste and to accept and also to be happy no matter which caste they were assigned. “‘and[sic] Delta children wear khaki. Oh no, I don't want to play with Delta children. And Epsilons are still worse. They're too stupid to be able to read or write. Besides, they wear black, which is such a beastly colour. I'm so glad I'm a Beta’” (Huxley 27). Furthermore, in the utopian society they have ways to avoid social unrest without harmful side effects such as Soma and further conditioning. At the same time, North America today what would be considered as unhappiness within the Brave New World community. Families cause unhappiness when they neglect or abuse one another, “There is a great deal of variabilities in how often dysfunctional interactions and behaviors occur in families, and in the kinds and the severity of their dysfunction. … they systematically foster abuse and/or neglect”(Dysfunctional Family Relationships). While the Brave New World has the ability to mass produce humans, condition them to think they way they want them to, and to create the perfect living conditions for them, North America today can not compete with the utopian society. In Brave New World they can clone seventy-two clones with one fertile egg. While in North America today there is only a 0.1 percent of cloning one embryo with one fertile egg. Furthermore with the 0.1 percent of clones successfully being cloned, they are born with abnormally large organs which occur to fail as they grow into adulthood. In conjunction with the technological advancement leading to a utopian society, North America today also can not condition humans using hypnopaedia or create the perfect living conditions like it can be in Brave New World.
In conclusion, that is how the soma and conditioning lead to happiness within Brave New World which contributes to the key characteristics for a utopian society. Along with how North America today has what would be considered as unhappiness in Brave New World. Additionally, how the loss of passion for knowledgeable books such as poetry and religion can limit the number of conflicts and wars. Lastly, how the technological advancement can contribute to how a society can be utopian or
