The Cane Toad
There are many different types of invasive species in Florida. There are a variety of birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians that live in Florida. For an example of an invasive nonnative bird that lives in Florida is the Turquoise - fronted Parrot. The Turquoise - fronted Parrot is known to live in four counties for at least ten years. Also, there is a variety of amphibians that inhabit Florida, such as the Cane Toad. The Cane Toad is a nonnative invasive amphibian that is so large that it is known as the Giant or Marine Toad. The Cane Toad has been known to live in Florida since the 1930s. Another nonnative invasive species that belongs to the reptile class is the Spectacled Caiman Crocodile. The Cane Toad is native to the Amazon Basin which is located in South America. The Cane Toad was first introduced to Florida to control pests that would inhabit the sugar cane crops between the 1930s to the 1940s. It is said that the reason of the overgrowing population of the Cane Toad is because of the illegal pet trade in the 1950s and 1960s. The Cane Toad can be found in the urban, suburban, and agricultural parts of Florida. There are many concerns about the threats that the Cane Toad has on the natives of Florida, some of the concerns is the skin-gland secretions of the Cane Toad are very toxic that can sicken or kill animals that prey on them. The skin secretions of the Cane Toad can irritate the skin or burn the eyes of people who touch them. There are many methods that are used to remove the Cane Toad, some of the methods are to hand-collect the Cane Toads and dispose of them, or use animal traps to capture them. Rewards have been put up to eradicate them for excessive amounts of money for example in 2004 a 44 million dollar reward was put up to eradicate the Cane Toad becuase of the harm it was …show more content…
The Spectacled Caiman Crocodile, also known as the White Caiman or Common Caiman, is said to inhabit Florida for the past ten years. The Spectacled Caiman Crocodile is known to be native in Southern Mexico to Northern Argentina and lives in lakes or freshwater rivers or streams. The crocodilian has been known cause threats to the inhabitants in Florida. The Spectacled Caiman Crocodile can cause great danger and harm to people and animals that come close to it. It has also been known to compete for food and space with many of the other animals in Florida. Some methods of removal are to hunt the crocodile, use traps, or call animal control.
