Montresor did not understand Fortunato’s hand gesture, but he says he is a mason. When Fortunato does not believe him, Montresor shows him a trowel. Fortunato says that Montresor is jesting, and they continue walking. They walked into a crypt, where its walls had been lined with human remains. Fortunato and Montresor see a little niche, where Montresor tells Fortunato that the Amontillado is there. Fortunato walks into the niche and a few seconds later, Montresor chains up Fortunato. Montresor starts building the wall. Fortunato starts screaming loudly. And when there remained a single stone to be fitted, Fortunato laughs as if this is a joke, but it isn’t. After Fortunato realized, he yelled out, “For the love of God, Montresor”. Then, he had stopped answering Montresor. Montresor calls his name twice, but there was no answer. So, he throws his torch through the remaining space and only hears the jingling of the bells. And in the end of the story, the narrator reveals that this has happened 50 years ago to show that he has not been caught.
