“I Grasped the poor beast by the throat and deliberately cut one of its eyes out of its sockets.”-The Black Cat. Edgar Allan Poe is an author who wrote poems and stories in the 1800’s. The narrator wanted to solve problems, but he went about it the wrong way so people died and he gets hurt. In Edgar Allan Poe's short stories the theme is think before you act the theme is shown through conflict, plot, and character. In poe’s short story “the tell tale heart” plot shows how think before you act can make a change of events happen. In the story the servant doesn't like the way the master's eye looks so he decides the way he wants to get rid of it is to kill him in his sleep. One quote that tells this is “To think that there I was opening the door little by little and he not ever to dream of my secret deeds or thoughts.” The …show more content…
servant was preparing to kill the master and was entering his room and got to the doorway. If the servant had thought twice about going in his master’s room he might not have killed his master. Another quote that tells this is “ He shrieked once, once only,in an instant I dragged him to the floor and pulled the heavy bed over him. The servant decided because he didn't like the master's eye, he would kill him and hide the body. If he would have thought twice about killing the master,he may have found a better solution for his hatred for the eye. Poe's writing clearly shows that things will go better for you if you think before you act in most situations. In “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe conflict shows how think before you act could help you in situations of stress and grief. In the story the raven enters the narrator's chamber uninvited. One quote that shows the raven has entered the chamber is “In there stepped a stately raven of the sanity days of yore.” When the narrator heard a tap at his window he opened it and the raven entered uninvited. He opened the window and let the raven in without thinking about his consequences. Another quote that tells about the raven is “ Prophet said I thing of evil, prophet still if bird or devil.” The bird refuses to leave the narrator's chamber and the narrator is beginning to get mad about it. It shows he is getting mad about the bird not leaving because he didn't think before he acted and opened the window and let it in his chamber/room. The conflict shows not thinking before you act can come with severe consequences like the narrator did. In “The Cask of Amontillado”character how think before you act can sometimes help keep the character out of trouble.
Character also shows how the people in the story can make mistakes and how think before you act could help them. One quote that tells this is “I passed down a long and winding staircase, requesting him to be cautious as he followed.” this takes place after Fortunato goes down and was walking around in the catacombs. This particular quote shows Fortunato went into the catacombs with a stranger and didn't think twice about what Montresor's intentions were. The other quote that explains what mistake Fortunato made is “you jest,he exclaimed recoiling a few paces, but let us proceed to the Amontillado. When was given the choice to travel to the Amontillado and chose to go with a stranger is when this quote takes place. This shows Fortunato didn't think twice about going down into the catacombs even when given a chance to stay above ground. The character in poe's story shows how the people in them don't use think before you act when in situations where they should be
used. Edgar Allan Poe's short stories recurring theme ,think before you act is shown through character, conflict, and plot. Character shows how poe's characters change throughout the story by the choices they have to make. Conflict tells that think before you act can change through the conversations and influences given to the characters in his stories. Plot shows how the places you would use think before you act can change throughout a story's storyline. Think before you act can help you in times that you need help and guidance ,in poe's stories if his characters would have used think before you act a lot of them wouldn't have ended up where they did.
