The Characters In John Hinton's The Outsiders
The main character of “The Outsiders” was Ponyboy Curtis, the younger brother of Darry and Sodapop Curtis. Ponyboy is very unique from all of the other characters, they are all unique. He isn’t the tuff like Dally, the pet like Johnny, the leader like Darry, the silly one like Sodapop, the wisecrack like two-bit, or even the confident and arrogant one like Steve. Ponyboy is quiet, smart, young, and kind. One of Ponyboys obstacles in the book was his brother Darry, the leader of the gang. “I could tell it was Darry though - partly because of the voice and partly because Darry’s always rough with me without meaning to be. ‘ “I didnt mean to!” Darry shouted… “Thats all i hear out of you! Cant you think of anything?” “Darry…” Sodapop began, but …show more content…
Noboday should ever holler at my brother. I exploded. “You dont yell at him!” I shouted. Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door.” Throughout the book Ponyboy talks about how much Darry hates him, and how he likes Sodapop better. He talks about how Darry gets mad when Ponyboy gets B’s on his report card but didnt get upset when Sodapop dropped out of school. At the end of the book though, Ponyboy realizes that Darry loves him so much that he is often to hard on him. “I let go of Soda and sood there for a minute. Darry didnt like me… he had driven me away that night… he had hit me… Darry hollered at me all the time… he didnt give a hang about me.. Suddenly I realized, horrified, that Darry was crying… In that second what Soda and Dally and Two-Bit had been trying to tell me came through. Darry did care about me, maybe as much as he cared about Soda, and because he cared he was trying to hard to make something of me.” In the end Ponyboy succeeded in overcoming his obstacle, Darry, because he finally realizes that all the times Darry was hard on him, or mean, he was only trying to help because he loved Ponyboy so

In the beginning of the story Dally and Ponyboy didn't get along the best. But throughout the story they became closer. Dally’s death happened right after he stole from the store. The cops showed up and circled around Dally under a street light. Dally soon pulled out a gun and acted like it was loaded but it really wasn't. How would the cops know that? They did not know that. After the cops told Dally to put the gun down multiple times and Dally still wouldn't do it so they shot him. Ponyboy took this really hard because him and Dally had gotten very close. Also dally had helped Ponyboy and Johnny out whenever they needed something. So I think that Ponyboy was really mad because he didn't stop it from happening. Also now Ponyboy is dealing with two deaths of his very good friends. “I knew he would be dead, because Dally Winston wanted to be dead and he always got what he wanted” said Ponyboy (Hinton…

The book I read was The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. This book is about the rivalry between the two groups which are the Greasers VS. Soc’s. The main characters in this story are Ponyboy, Johnny, Dallas, Darry, Sodapop, and Two-bit. The Soc’s puts Ponyboy Curtis and his best friend Johnny in a bad and dangerous spot. One night at the movies, Ponyboy and Johnny fall in love with Sherri and Marcia after they got Dally, the toughest of the Greasers to stop attempting to get with the girls. Sherri and Marcia are from the snobbish and rich group, the Socs but that doesn’t bother Johnny and Ponyboy from liking them. That night, after the movies, they went to the park and when the Soc’s were beating up on Ponyboy, the small and scared Johnny gets up and stabs a member of the Soc’s. After the stabbing that Johnny did they run away to a church in Windrixville and supply food for a week with only one gun and some money. After staying there for a week the church catches on fire and kids are inside. Johnny and Ponyboy risk their lives to save the kids and unfortunately Johnny dies a little bit after. Then they rumble with the Soc’s and win! They did it for Johnny and that’s what determined them to win.…

Darry’s responsibility showed through the way that he worked two jobs and still parented his brothers. Ponyboy stated,“Darry works too long and hard to be interested in a story or a book” (page 2). Ponyboy also said , “Darry worked two jobs at once and made good at both of them, and kept an outstanding record at school” (page 108). This shows that Darry worked so long helping his brothers and keeping two jobs that he did not have enough time to do little things like reading a book. Darry also kept his grades up when he was in highschool and he even got a scholarship , but for the sake of his brothers he didn 't go to college. So while in highschool he had to worry about all his grades and sports he still did good working two jobs and parented his brothers. Darry worked long and hard for his brothers but sometimes he had to be protective and got on to his brothers when they did something that could have impacted their lives in a bad way.…

Darry was always serious and he had a weird way of showing Ponyboy he loved him but he did love him. Even though he didn't say it or express it he did love him and I knew this because he always told Ponyboy to stay out of trouble and to never walk home alone so he wouldn't get sent to a home. Darry and Soda had different points of view on how to interact with their brother Ponyboy. On page 2, the books states, “Soda’s never hollering at me all the time the way Darry is, or treating me as if I am six instead of fourteen.” From this quote, the reader is told that Darry treats Ponyboy differently than Soda. It can be inferred that Darry is more strict with Ponyboy while Soda may not be as strict. On the other hand, “Soda’s always happy-go-lucky and grinning, while Darry’s hard and firm and rarely grins at all.” (The Outsiders, pg. 2) This quote shows another example of how Soda is different from Darry because it shows Soda being more joyful and relaxed, but Darry is more stern and not warm. Furthermore, the way both brothers treat Ponyboy demonstrates Hinton’s theme that family is there to support each other at all times because both brothers clearly care about Pony but show it in different…

“Let me fight, Darry…” “Well”-Darry gave in-”I guess you can.” ( Hinton. 135) This quote is showing Darry is letting Ponyboy be involved in things that can get him hurt or even killed, Darry is not thinking of the consequences of how Ponyboy can get hurt in that Rumble . Darry wasn’t so convinced of letting him go , yes that’s good, but Darry still let him go fight in this big rumble , if he were a better guardian he would’ve left him at home. Knowing that Ponyboy could get hurt Darry still let him fight and if he really did care about him he would’ve not let him go. A good guardian thinks if he will get hurt and the consequences first, instead of just letting a kid go to a big fight where he could get hurt. “Darry’s hard and firm and rarely grins at all.” this quote shows how Darry doesn’t show any emotion and isn’t really happy , Ponyboy shouldn’t be with someone that is serious all the time and shows no feelings , because he can become like that too . Ponyboy might not tell Darry things because he probably thinks Darry doesn’t care because he never shows emotions, and Ponyboy should be with someone that is a least a bit happy and boost Ponyboy’s emotions . In the system Ponyboy will be…

Family relationships are tested in S.E. Hinton’s, The Outsiders. Hinton uses conflict to reveal characteristics between Pony and his brother Darry, which are kill, rough, and caring . Loving but cold, Darry tells Pony that he will kill him if he gets into trouble. “Darry would kill me if I got into trouble with the police” (1). Darry won’t literally kill Pony if he gets in trouble, Darry will just be very angry at him because if they do get in trouble their family will be separated. Pony and Darry’s relationship is not just cold but it’s rough too. Hinton shows how rough they are in the book which reads, “...Darry and Dad were brothers instead of father and son. But they only looked alike, my father was never rough on anyone without meaning…
