The Chi Rho: Christian Symbols
Christian Symbolism Christian symbolism has been an important part of religion from the very beginning; image references such as visual representations, and signs have assisted in worship performed by individuals for centuries. Even today symbolism is commonly used to convey a specific meaning or communicate a special message. Christianity in particular is a great example of the use of symbolism for religious purposes. The symbol of the Chi Rho originated in Rome in the year 305 CE. This monogram was the very first symbol of Christianity, and was appointed when the persecution of Christians came to an end. This event is a very important occasion in history, as well as a milestone for the Christian religion. The symbol itself consists of two letters of the Greek alphabet, the first letter of the alphabet-Alpha- and the last letter of the …show more content…
Basically symbolism is any object that represents another to give it another meaning that is much deeper and significant. It gives someone the ability to add multiple levels of meaning and have broader implications. Symbolism has been used by many religions worldwide. Symbols-visual representations and signs-have always been played an important role in religions of all kinds to mean many different things. And in reference to the religion of Christianity it is no different. ReligionFacts.com makes a very good point in saying “Christians may be called “people of the book” (meaning they are readers of the bible) and “people of the faith” (meaning they believe in unseen things). Still, imagery plays an important role in the Christian life. For instance, symbols incorporating colors, shapes, and numbers have significant importance in the right context.” (ReligionFacts, “Christian Symbols

There are multiple symbols to represent religious ceremonies in church. The most common I think would be the cross. But, if you look deeper into different denominations you will see each one has a different symbol. Christianity is most commonly associated with a cross, or the Christian flag. The Catholic church is most commonly associated with Mother Mary and a rosary. Budism is an golen statue, Jews have the star of David.…

One mentioned important and religious symbolism is being immersed in water. Rather it be in a river, a bathtub, a pond, a sewage reservoir, or even a baptism chamber, being immersed in water usually has the purpose of symbolizing a change in a character. This is obviously based off the Christian belief of baptism, but beyond baptism in that sometimes that person becomes a new person. Another rather vulgar use of symbolism is sex.…

Symbolism is when an object represents something other than itself, often of a more abstract nature. Symbolism creates quality aspects that make literature more meaningful. Symbolism is often recognised as an important part of an extended text used to enhance a theme or idea of a story to a deeper level. This is why symbolism is a significant feature of a novel. An example of this is in the novel The Poisonwood Bible written by Barbara Kingslover. The story is set in 1959 and follows an obsessive Baptist minister named Nathan Price who drags his wife (Orleanna) and four daughters, (Adah, Rachel, Ruth-May and Leah) deep into the heart of the Congo on a mission to save the “unenlightened” people of Africa. The five women narrate the novel. From the beginning, the attitudes of the five women cover a wide spectrum of events and happening of their time in the Congo. There are many examples of symbolism in The Poisonwood Bible including the demonstration garden, Methuslelah and the Poisonwood tree itself.…

The use of symbol to express human understandings of God is useful because it can hold a deeper meaning than can be described using words. The Christian symbol of the crucifix for example, reminds people of Jesus’ death on the cross, but the deeper meaning that can be gotten from this is the idea of Jesus’ as a sacrifice he made for our sins.…

Symbolism is used all throughout the Bible. Everything in the Bible has a significant meaning and a purpose. Symbolism helps create understanding and depth. It can help make the theme of a story become clearer. Themes alone can sound preachy, and stories alone can sound shallow. Symbolism weaves the two together to create a perfect balance. Symbols are usually used to describe something complex, Jesus used symbols so we could understand his preaching’s. God’s journey with the Israelites is one of the greatest epics ever written. In all good tales symbolism is often used. Both in the old and new testaments three things are often used as symbols; the vine, the olive tree, and the fig tree. These three things come together…

    The Christian Cross Analysis

    • 2391 Words
    • 10 Pages

The cross, it may seem to be something so simple, yet the Christian community, and other bible believing communities, treat it like it is the air they breathe. Why is something so facile, so salient to a society of people? The Christian community finds the cross to be their solitude; the cross is their symbol of freedom from torment, and the love God has for them. Just as the American flag shows American citizens freedom, or the Statue of Liberty told the immigrants they were safe. The cross tells the Christians that they do not need to worry about what will happen after death anymore. They believe God has them and will not let them fall into an eternity of torment. The Christian community holds on to the cross with vigilance and will fight…

“Symbolism is no mere idle fancy or corrupt egerneration: it is inherent in the texture of human life” by Alfred Whitehead. Symbolism helps us to comprehend things. Some ideas and points in life are so complicated that writers and artist use symbolism to make it easier to understand. Just like, the Author of the book “Animal Farm”, George Orwell. He writes this book about animals who revolt on as farm and end up more worse then before. Orwell uses symbolism in good and bad animals to representative the society that Russia had at the time.…
