The Child By Tiger

“The Child by Tiger” by Thomas Wolfe is a story about a man named Dick Prosser, who is a negro servant for a white family. He was always a very good and deeply religious man while working for the family, until one day he snapped and killed many people. This story has many great examples for the different styles of readers who will read it, especially people who use the CAM style and people who use the Digger for Secrets style of reading. These styles are both shown in two main areas in the story. They are shown in when the story tells us about Dick Prosser, and why he did it ended up killing a bunch of people.
The CAM style is shown in “The Child by Tiger” in the way Dick Prosser is described and how he acts. Dick is described as “the best man he'd ever had, the smartest darky that he'd ever known.” Dick could do many thing. He could play football, he could shoot a gun, he could box,
Wolfe uses many references to Dick being a tiger. For example the narrator uses sayings like “his own great black paw” This is a symbol to show how big and strong, but it also tells that there is a dangerous side to him. It is even shown when the narrator says that Dick “went too softly, at too swift a pace. He was there upon you sometimes like a cat.” and even though it is not directly stated when Wolfe uses William Blake’s poem “The Tiger” he is indirectly referring to Dick as the tiger and the poem is talking about how dangerous the tiger is. Wolfe talks about many other aspects of Dick’s life, such as that he is a good shoot, knows how to box, play football, and build a fire with no smoke or waste. These things most likely come from the fact that Dick was in the military. Wolfe also portrays Dick as a very calm and collected man. All these things together make the reader ask the question “If Dick is such a calm man then why would he go and kill all those
