Wolfe uses many references to Dick being a tiger. For example the narrator uses sayings like “his own great black paw” This is a symbol to show how big and strong, but it also tells that there is a dangerous side to him. It is even shown when the narrator says that Dick “went too softly, at too swift a pace. He was there upon you sometimes like a cat.” and even though it is not directly stated when Wolfe uses William Blake’s poem “The Tiger” he is indirectly referring to Dick as the tiger and the poem is talking about how dangerous the tiger is. Wolfe talks about many other aspects of Dick’s life, such as that he is a good shoot, knows how to box, play football, and build a fire with no smoke or waste. These things most likely come from the fact that Dick was in the military. Wolfe also portrays Dick as a very calm and collected man.
