The Chosen Case Study and Applicable Theorist
In the following paper, Dorothea Orem’s nursing theory of “Self-Care Deficit”, is going to be applied to a case study involving a patient who has obtained a left radial fracture. In the case study, the patient, whose name is Chad, reports to the emergency department after falling off of a ladder at work. While performing an assessment on Chad, he reports that he has been exhausted after working ten hour days for the last three consecutive days. Upon his physical assessment, findings revealed that he has a low-grade fever, is tachycardic, tachypneic, has dry mucous membranes, decreased skin turgor, and a blood pressure of 95/78 mmHg. In addition, his blood work findings revealed that his sodium and hematocrit levels are elevated. A relevant concept that can be applied to this situation is the universal requisite. Under this concept, Chad would benefit from balancing his daily life between activities, such as work, and a much needed time to rest and recoup for the following day (Petiprin, 2016). When using this concept, a person needs to conscientiously take their entire life into consideration so that they can determine what is of utmost importance to them. Furthermore, they need to be cognizant of the risks that can arise from placing themselves under continuous physical stress, without taking the time to adequately intervene when signs and symptoms of complications emerge. If Chad had properly balanced his daily schedule to allow for periods of adequate rest and recuperation, he could have been able to avoid the sequence of events that led to his
