The main character in Black in The Circle series written by Ted Dekker is Thomas Hunter. He is a character that begins the story being an average joe and changes drastically throughout the story because of reasons that he did not cause. Early in the story, Thomas had very little to worry about. He had a stable (albeit low-paying) job and lived with his sister. However, he owed some people a lot of money and had never paid them off, resulting in them tracking him down. Thomas is shot by people chasing him through the streets of Denver: "And then Thomas Hunter dreamed, and the world would never be the same" (Dekker 15). In this dream world that seems all-too-real, he wakes up not remembering anything from this world, but everything seems familiar to him. A stunning young lady by the name of Rachelle starts to teach Thomas about the world in the "colored forest," as the place she lives is called. Eventually, she decides that she would like to marry Thomas: "'You are a beautiful man, Thomas Hunter,' she said. 'I have chosen you'" (Dekker 49). In the colored forest, the woman chooses a man that she would like to marry and in turn forces the man to chase after her, confirming them to be married. Thomas does not know this, and asks around about what to do about Rachelle, but eventually learns that he must pursue her to get married. Later, Thomas begins to fall in love with Rachelle even though he is still doubting the concept. He still does not understand the society that he know finds himself in his dreams: "This sort of statement must be completely normal, but because of amnesia, it felt…ambitious. Daring. Wonderful" (Dekker 89).
