The City In The Travels Of Marco Polo
Marco Polo was a Venetian merchant that had an extraordinary life. As a young adult, Marco would begin a monumental journey that would span continents and would solidify his place in history. His story would become wildly popular and spark many imaginations when it was dictated to and written down by Rustichello da Pisa, in The Travels of Marco Polo (c.1300). Along with his father and uncle, Marco set out for the seat of Kublai Khan at Khanbaliq, Cathay. During the 17 years Marco was in Kublai’s service, he would travel throughout the empire doing the great Khan’s bidding. It is unclear when Marco made his way to the city of Hangzhou, the former capital of the defeated southern Song dynasty, but the city left a lasting impression on him. In fact, Marco Polo believed the city so great in a variety of ways, that he said, “the city is beyond dispute the finest and the noblest in the world.” (cp 179). …show more content…
He states that the city is supposedly 100 miles in circumference, although it is not clear if Marco is using the Chinese scale or something else (cp 181). He states that the city is so large, and since Hangzhou appears to be in and surrounded by water, the city requires 12,000 stone bridges that are large enough for fleets of ships to pass under (cp 181). The size of the bridges must have struck Marco as magnificent because although his home city of Venice is also along the water and has bridges, he takes time to mention just how large the bridges of Hangzhou are. Marco also comments on the grand scale of the guilds found within the city. So large in scale that each of the 12 guilds had 12,000 homes to house all the workers, with potentially 12-40 men living within each house. As a merchant himself, Marco was impressed with the scale of commerce with the city, and commented on how the leaders of the guilds lived, “delicately as if they were

On their return to Saint Antoine, a policeman tells the Defarges that there is a spy in their neighborhood. He gives them a description of his appearance, as well as his name- John Barsad. Madame Defarge decides to knit his name into the register. When they finally arrive at their home, Madame Defarge counts the money that was made while they were away and Defarge concedes to his fears and doubts about the revolution. Madame Defarge encourages him in her comparison of the revolution to lightning and earthquakes. Lightning storms and earthquakes both take some time to form, but when they are ready, they can destroy anything in their paths. The revolution may take a very long time to begin, but when it does, it would be unstoppable. The next day, Barsad, the spy, comes into the wine-shop looking to glean a little information from the Defarges. As he walks in, however, Madame Defarge recognizes him from the description previously given to her. She picks a up a rose from beside her and casually puts it in her hair. As they notice, customers start to trickle out of the store. Barsad carries the pretense of a friend and advocate to the revolution, comments on the cruelty shown to the peasants, and addresses the “apparent” unrest the area was under following Gaspard’s execution. The Defarges admit to nothing and feign indifference. When he sees no succeeding in his approach, Barsad tells the Defarges the news about Miss Lucie Manette. He tells them she is going to marry a Mr Charles Darnay, a French nobleman who is, in fact, the late Marquis’ nephew and heir. After hearing this news, Madame Defarge knits the name Charles Darnay into the registry.…

Marco Polo’s book was more widely read. It was both believed and doubted. Some called him the ‘great liar.’ And some of what he said is made up or exaggerated. Marco spent seventeen years in the Orient serving the Great Khan, the ruler of the Mongols and Chinese. He easily learned new languages making him useful to the Mongol ruler. Later in life, Marco was taken prisoner during a war. He told the tale of his adventures to fellow prisoners and one of them wrote it down. His tale of the riches and wonders of the east inspired people to seek an easier sea route to China and other eastern lands. They wanted a direct route that would avoid the Arab traders who insisted on being intermediaries.…

There were about five thousand years of resplendent civilization in the history of China, and 408 emperors (Kuaican) with forty (Dan) different dynasties were parts of it. Those emperors were like the stars of the Milky Way, as some of them were regard as real stars because of their feat, but some of them were looked as meteors from what they did. There was a twinkling superstar at the Milky Way of Chinese history. His name was Aixinjueluo Xuanye, who was also known as the Emperor Kang Xi. The difference is the size of the city. From reading the Source from the Past, it describes Constantinople as a small city because it reveals, “The circumference of the city of Constantinople is eighteen miles…” However, Constantinople: Capital of Byzantium says, “By medieval standards it was a huge city, with something around three hundred seventy-five thousand inhabitants…” In Constantinople: Capital of Byzantium, Harris describes Constantinople as a bigger city with a huge population and because of this they had problems feeding and supplying fresh water to the people as the city’s population grew. Fortunately, Constantinople had the wealth and knowledge to fix the problems they faced by “creating a network of aqueducts to carry water in from the streams and rivers…” The difference in size of Constantinople between the Source from the Past and the scholarly source is important because it is significant to know the size and the city’s ability to maintain and use the resources they have. The document on “The Wealth and Commerce of Constantinople” is still important but has a different size of the city. This is most likely because Spanish rabbi Benjamin was a traveler during a time in history in which he did not have the ability to give the accurate size of Constantinople or a way to tell how big the population actually was at that…
