A great period "European in 15th and 16th century" is known as "the Age of Exploration." However what caused this improvement? During this period, European increasing their knowledges and techniques, expanded their land, also led their country to become rich. The main cause for European exploration in 15th and 16th century was spirit of adventure follow by economic motives to a lesser extend religious motives.
In the first place, the spirit of adventure is the most major reason that caused European exploration. European started to traveled to other continent.
In 1297, Marco with his companion started a long journey to visit a great Mongol ruler Khubilai Khan and as the ruler's ambassadors he visited to Japan and created a book called Travels. This book covered the most informative descriptions of Asia by medieval European travelers. (Duiker 494) The products of other countries made European richer. Next, economic motives was also a main reason that led to European expansion.
An economic motive affected in Renaissance European expansion. The rise of capitalism was an affective change to the process.(Duiker 494) There were two trade routs linked Europe and Asia. One was spice trade routs and the other was gold trade routes. These trade routs brought "silks, spices, gems and other high-value commodities to Europe. (Arnold 11, 12) Portugal transported the gold to Europe a long time and became to control the flow of the gold from Mediterranean ports. Because of that, the golden age of Portuguese had begun. The last reason of Europe expansion is about religious motives. People was believing god. As a Spanish conqueror went to the New World he explained that he is going to "Serve God and His Majesty, to give light to those who were in darkness, and to grow rich, as all men desire to do." (Duiker 494) The crusaders's who had experience of Eastern food helped European to understand more about how to use spices to flavoring. (Arnold 12) "The desire to Christianize Muslims and pagan people played a central role in European expansion." For instance, Queen of Spain, Isabella was trying to converting the Muslims to Christianity and centralized the Muslims. (Buckler 504)
There were three main reasons that caused expansion in Europe during 15th to 16th century. The most major reason is spirit of adventure and the others were economic and religious motive. Not only in Europe, theses three reasons are also needed for expansion of other continent s.
