The Civil War And The Anti-Slavery Movement

Slavery was a huge deal in America during the 1800s. The United States was torn between the north or the Union and south or the Confederate states during these years because of their different views of slavery. The south was fighting for the freedom of slaves while the north fought to keep slavery prevalent. The north and souths’ different views on slavery led to the Civil War. The Americans who opposed slavery did everything in their power to launch the Antislavery movements, or the actions taken to put an end to slavery. Anti-slavery movements can also be called abolitionism. The anti-slavery movement which wanted to immediately put an end to slavery, segregation, and racial discrimination was a political and social approach to the issue. Both sides of the Civil War had reasons as to why they either wanted slavery to end or to keep slavery in the American society.
Aside from the south, the north was more of a manufacturing economy, compared to agricultural economy of the south. About 90% of the world’s manufacturing came from states in the north. A reason the north wanted to gain freedom for slaves was because they gained little profit from slaves in the north. While cotton became a main cash crop in the south, the need for slaves increased because it made the south money. The south argued that African American would not be capable of taking care of themselves without slavery, because it fed, paid, and clothed African Americans. The south also argued the case that if every slave was free, then it would lead to worldwide unemployment and turmoil. The south also believed that slavery was a natural state of mind because, the Greeks, the Romans, and the English had slaves during early times in
