The Cleveland Basketball School: A Short Story
Lizzie has always consistently been there for me since day one. Even though Lizzie tried to get me stirred, I couldn’t handle much more. Last summer, before the season started I went to this place called Cleveland Basketball School where you go for a nonstop 2 hour workout session or routine. Since my parents paid so much for this camp, and Dominique still consists on saying ridiculous comments to me, it eventually made me upset.
Then at that very second, my head almost bursted because of what I started to realize, so that's when I mumbled, “I'm going to get some water. Don’t worry about me, work on some free throws.”
I literally don’t get a water break, I call my mom. I await for my mom to pick me up so I can go home and get some downtime

Each player on the team has a crucial part to us being champs. Generally speaking, I feel insanely depressed because they don’t care about the team obviously if they’re getting in trouble at school. I’m always thinking so opposing when it comes to this detention stuff, because I will have to be running almost the entire game. Without three players, that means there will be one sub. But when playing the game you love, you have to make sacrifices, I thought to myself. For the time being, I splash water on my face, stop thinking of negative thoughts in my head, say a prayer and then sprint onto the court like it’s the last basketball game i’ll ever participate in. The custodians cleaned the court to where there isn't one speckle of grey, filthy dust visible so you could hear the shoes of the athletes squeal as they jogged across the court. Also, the bleachers are all filled up with students and parents coming to see the intense game. Signs pop up saying “Go Knights” from the student section showing immense support of the team. There is two minutes left for warming up and I use that to the maximum. I shoot and follow through. My energy tingles through my body starting at my feet all the way to my arms when I then release the ball. BUZZ goes the clock and the game begins. Lizzie, Dominique, Lexi, Faith, Bobo and I are the only ones controlling this game for the Lady …show more content…
lady knights!” we all huddle up and shout.
“Let's go ladies, we can do anything if we put our energy out on that.. ” Lexi begins to assure us, but the ref blows the whistle to begin the wild game. To sum up, Lexi’s another buddy of mine that obviously is very positive unlike Dominique, I believe anyway.
To begin with, Lizzie gets jump ball and runs down the court like she was running the 400 during track, with the basketball making a low pitch noise every time it bounces off the silent gym’s court and shoots with just enough arch, making a two pointer to start the game. Defense kills the other team, so I get in a butt down, chest up position and follow my girl. I’m starting to gain confidence after realizing my teams counting on me today. “ Lyndsey you’re so slow! Get off the court if you’re going to play like this,“ Dominique barked, but I just ignore the rude little comment.
Inside, I just have that inner thought to punch her in the face. I would never say such a rude comment, bully or embarrass any of my friends like she does. Something about Dominque just bothers me, I thought as I clean the dripping sweat off my forehead with my

a seasonal basketball tournament. Carter discovers the progress reports filled out by the faculty reveal some of the students have been skipping classes and are struggling academically. Coach Carter initiates a lockdown on the gym, banning the team from playing until they improve their grades. Coach Carter is criticized by parents and academic faculty. The school board eventually confronts Carter who justifies his actions, explaining he wants to give his team the opportunity and option to further education so they won't resort to crime. Coach insisted that achieving a sound education is more important for the students than winning basketball games. In my point of view Coach Carters administration staff and basketball parents were disengaged. The parents did not have vision or hope for their kids,…

James Naismith was the creator of basketball. He created it in 1891 to condition young athletes in the winter. The “hoop” was a peach basket and the ball was a soccer styled ball. There were many rules for the new game. He created it in a YMCA gym in Springfield, Massachusetts. His team of eighteen was divided into two teams of nine and then the peach baskets were nailed above their heads. Every time one would score a basket, the game was stopped for the janitor to get up on a ladder and retrieve the ball. Later on, the bottoms of the “hoops” were taken out and they became a (sort of) real basket.…

"Time out!" Yell the coach of the opposing team. Running to the bench, we sit and try to listen to see how we will play the last 45 seconds. We are so close to each other that you can practically hear the heart beats thundering in the other girls' hearts. Coach's lips are moving and there is a small breeze from his hand moving so fast telling us where we have to position. All anyone is thinking is that we need to score.…

As a fourth grader, being told that “winning isn’t everything” was a little hard to believe. Only recently do I realize how true this statement is and how important it is to learn this. I believe that in playing sports, what is most important is improving oneself, working as a team, and demonstrating good sportsmanship. Playing CBAA basketball has taught me these values and has played a large role in shaping me into the humble and compassionate person that I am today.…

I stood up and walked down the stairs to the court. The team and I went to the locker room like we always do at the end of the third quarter of the girl’s varsity game. Our opponent? The number one team in the state of Kansas, the Hanover Wildcats. With only two seniors, our team had a record that you don’t exactly brag about.…

The first game of the intramural season had hype behind it because part of the lacrosse team was playing another team full of lacrosse players. We started our warm ups more organized then I thought, when we did lay up lines and practiced pull up jump shots. One thing you should know about me and basketball is I take it extremely seriously. In fact in all sports I’m an intense competitor. The game started off pretty slow, because both teams weren’t shooting very well. We were down 5 to 2 when I hit a 3 pointer to tie the game 5 to 5. The game was intense, due to my lacrosse teammate Kyle Coats had his shooting sleeve on and was laying the ball up like it was no ones business. My team responded to every punch though and with the time running out in the…

We waited in the gym for about 4 hours, then I got hungry. I walked through the dark hallway to use the vending machine. After I got my honey bun, I walked around to the field house to see if they posted the team. They did, 14 id numbers on one sheet of paper. I looked up and down the list multiple times looking for my id number and unfortunately it wasn’t on there. My heart was broken and I was so confused. I walked home teary-eyed and when I arrived home I cried my eyes out. After that I didn’t play basketball for a whole week, which I had never done. After that week I got back in the gym, and kept playing every day as usual. I went to all of their games because I loved the sport and I wanted to support my friends. After the season ended everything went back to normal, we kept going to the YMCA every day. Now school has ended and summer league starts. Coach put me on Jr. Varsity just too test my skills and the first game, it was the best game of my life. I dunked the ball on a fast break and I couldn’t miss. I was the star player and that showed coach I was better so he put me on varsity. All in all I am just saying never give up and work as hard as you can, it will pay…

Laurel high school has been the most glamorous of places to play baseball. The grass was scarce, dominated from large patches of dirt scattered across the outfield. Our batting cage left untouched for months at a time, creating a chest high jungle of weeds that consumed you as you entered. There were no perks of playing for the baseball program. The athletic director ignored us, the students didn’t support us, and the School wouldn’t adequately fund us. All we had were ourselves and an insatiable drive to succeed. I entered my freshman year out of shape, and with little baseball talent at all. I arrived at tryouts as an underdog, but I didn’t let that deter me. After three days of intense tryouts, I was named as a member of the junior varsity team. Unfortunately, The season didn’t go…

On January 26th, I made a huge error in my basketball game against West Central. To anybody else, that game might have seemed unimportant- insignificant really. They were not a conference rival or a sectional team. To me however, this game was very significant because I used to attend that school. At that game, I played all of my friends from kindergarten to fifth grade. I hoped that I didn’t make a fool of myself. I hoped to do amazing so that all of my old friends would see what a great basketball player I had become. I hoped that I would make a play so amazing that everyone would remember it. While I would certainly not forget the play I made, it was not the spectacular one I had dreamed. My gym teacher- Mr. Prairie asked the class, “Who’s ready for the basketball game tonight against West Central,” and I wondered if I was. Because of my insistent worrying I could not manage to make a play through all of gym class (we were playing basketball)…

I decided to advocate to the coach about my involvement in the practices as a player. As I walked into the hot and humid office of the coach, I waited until he was not as busy with his work. As the fan turned, he finally stopped what he was doing, “What’s up, Ariana?” the coach voiced. I explained my aspirations to play basketball. As I spoke, I watched his face, trying to get a sense of what he was thinking. After I stopped talking, I waited for his answer. He moved around as if it would help him figure out what to say when he knew his answer was…

As we entered the last week of practice, I wanted relish what I thought would be the last few moments of the season. The varsity head coach was present at the last day of practice, and I was surprised when he pulled me aside during a drill. He told me that he had noticed my success during the season, and he wanted me to join the varsity team; for the varsity team still had two weeks of practice left before the state tournament. I held in my excitement and accepted his offer.…
