The important question that George Washington struggled with was whether or not to try and defend New York from British rule and invasion. Although most colonies voted towards independence, there were some colonies that were more willing to join this movement than others. In Virginia, the four Virginia counties were all pro-independence and as a whole regarded themselves as the most important player in this political crises. (62) In contrast to Virginia, in New York many of the wealthiest merchants remained fully loyal to Britain and the king.
