1) What is Microsoft’s competitive advantage? How is supported/constrained by human resource management?

Microsoft Corporation is one of the largest and most influential companies in the personal computer industry. It has won several awards for innovation, for their commitment to diversity, and for their flexible work arrangements. It has always been a leader in the market with regard to its compensation. With 80,0004 employees across the world, having more than $15 billion revenue, it is one of the biggest and best‐known technology companies in the world.
It’s successful because of their workplace environment, empowerment of employee ideas, and their employee benefits. These elements are the result of the strategy that the Microsoft is following in order to compute its mission which is to enable business and people throughout the world to realize their full potential. The main competitive advantage of Microsoft is based on having the smartest and brightest people in the company and inspiring them to be the best, by using the human resources. At Microsoft, the HR department is made accountable for maximizing the value of their people asset to drive business success (the company has adopted the performance culture model). In order to achieve this, the company has adopted special HR management strategies, that are:

* Extraordinary recruiting program * Stimulating work environment * People development through stretch and challenge * effective review and reward system

with an aim to bring into the company the best talent which is capable, growth oriented and passionate. The industry invest continually in the development of employees. That means that core HR functions, process and practices are concerned with: talent acquisition and development, management development, leadership development and management of the evolution of the Microsoft culture.
