Hungary wanted independence from the Austrian empire. Hungary pushed for it due to Austria losing the Austro-Prussian War as well as territory. The Austrian Emperor, Francis/Franz Joseph, compromised with Hungarian elites to make the Compromise of 1867, allowing for the two nations to act autonomously. Both had their own governments and economies, and the two only needed to work together for a few matters, such as military spending (Siegel).
3-4. Regions within the Empire were usually ethnically separated due to the ethnic tensions. It was common practice for groups to “cleanse”, which essentially means to kill, people of different religions. Also, while policies were passed in an attempt at equality between the various races, ambiguous wording and classifications of ethnic groups created controversy, and ultimately more violence and rivalry (Hungarian).
