The Armenian people living in the Ottoman provinces of eastern Anatolia, like other non-Turkish and non-Muslim subjects of the Empire, had long suffered from systematic discrimination and, at times, harsh persecution. For them the Ottoman Empire’s entry into the First World War was to have particularly devastating consequences. Indeed, it is widely claimed that the Armenians were victims of a deliberate genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman authorities – an accusation that continues to be strongly denied by Turkey.

The Armenians were made to pay more tax than anyone else. The Armenians even with all the unfir treatment were oretty successful and tended to be scholars and the more brilliant people. The Turks felt that nnot only had the Armenians taken their land but they were stealing the jobs too. With all this tension, paranoia finally grew on the Turks. The then ruler, Sultan Abdul Hamid began to accuse Armenians of disloyalty to the Ottoman Empire while supporting other Christian nations such as Russia. Bearing in mind that this was before World War 1, this was a very dangerous and serious accusation. Although there was no truth in it,this was the perfect way the Turks thought they could get rid of the Armenians. In 1908, a group of reformers called the Young Turks, through a coup, overthrew Sultan Abdul Hamid. The Armenians thought that with the new government in power, they would finally be treated as equalsl. Little did they know, that the current government had planned more extreme measures for them than the previous ruler.In 1915, the systematic killing of Armenians begun. First the Turks rounded up all the strong and young Armenian men. Under the guise that they had work for them to do, the Turkish government massacred all the strong and youmg Armenian men.
