As Corvus is Latin for Crow or Raven, both of which generally symbolize the same meaning when it comes to mythology, represents deceit, message-carrier and one's self obsession. According to the Greek Myth, Corvus was tasked with watching over Apollo's pregnant wife and caught her with a lover. In anger, the wife was murdered by Apollo and the bird was …show more content…
damned to darkness for delivering such a horrid report. This, according to the myth, was a selfish act on the Raven's part and he was even advised not to deliver the message by a Crow, who claimed the same fate was bestowed upon him. This constellation was found by Ptolemy in the second century, though he only discovered seven of the eleven stars.
I, however, have my own reasoning for why this constellation is called The Raven.
As one is familiar with Poe's poetry of how the Raven was an evil prophet that was a torturing symbol of death from the main character, I believe it is called the Raven because it has tricked Apollo in how to rise the sun. There was a myth among the Natives that go the world was inhabit by darkness until the Raven brought the sun as a beacon of hope among the dark. One night, the Raven had met Leo, the lion of the southwest sky. There has been nothing but floods that destroyed the south and he asked if the sun could come and stay so the water would evaporate and the people would have hope. Now, since Apollo had stolen the sun from the Raven, he has been much greedy with it but the Raven created a plan. At high noon the next morning, Corvus saw Apollo streak across the sky and claimed the message that his wife was cheating on him. In outrage, he went to follow to get more elaborations and streaked across the sky to the southern sky. Here they quarreled, the sun staying in the south as the flood in Egypt became mostly a desert. When Apollo realized his trickery, he cursed the bird but the damage was done: the south remains to get the most sun because otherwise, they would blame the Gods for leaving them in the
dark.
