Weakness, Jealousy and Manipulation
In the 1950’s people were imprisoned for being accused as communists. Many lost their jobs and family. Many were afraid to stand up for themselves, therefore people just accused them even if they were innocent. How would innocent people feel if they were used as everyone’s scapegoat? Imagine if they had to accuse other people of witchcraft just to save there job, and social status. Senator McCarthy had accused various amounts of people, of communism. Even the people from the Government that have a higher power would not stand up to him. There were only a few people that would stand up to Senator McCarthy. A definition, a theme, and how the theme affected my daily life are important in understanding The Crucible.
The definition of The Crucible is a test. There were many people that were tested throughout the play. Mary Warren, because she was planning on telling the court all of Abby’s lies, but then ends up giving in to Abby and goes along with the accusations.“That were pretence sir (Miller p.1095).” At first Mary was telling the court the truth, and confessing that what she had said was “pretence.” Later Mary tried to confess, Abby and the girls were turning against her and accusing her of sending her spirit out onto them. When Mary did not want to tell the court the truth anymore, “Let me go Mr. Proctor, I cannot, I cannot- (Miller p.1096).” Mary went along with the girls so she would not get accused.
Also John Proctor was tested. He is tested as a man and a husband, if he should choose between honesty and pride.”Adultery John (Miller p.1073).” John forgot the last commandment because he was trying to put the thought of what happened with him and Abby in the back of his mind. He did not want to confess at the time so he could keep the respect he had. Later on John wanted to confess to the court of what happened. “God help me I
