The Crucible Analysis

In 1692 the Salem Witch Trials were held to hang people suspected of witchcraft. Arthur Miller researched these trials and wrote “The Crucible.” Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” began with a group of girls,led by Abigail Williams,getting caught dancing naked in the forest, presumably performing witchcraft. The townspeople were all in paranoia and convicting women of witchcraft,one of the convicted women is Elizabeth Proctor,the wife of the protagonist John Proctor.Arthur Miller shows how fear can lead to blame through the wavering,timid, and dishonest nature of Mary Warren,who is John Proctor’s servant.

Through Mary Warren’s wavering nature the author shows how fear can lead to blame.When all the characters were in the courtroom in act 2 scene 1 Mary Warren was being accused of witchcraft by Abigail,because she accused Abigail for pretending to be “under a spell” and imprisoning many women that she didn’t like.Abigail made the
Abby’ll charge lechery on you Mister proctor!”(Miller 31).Mary’s ultimately timid nature was later revealed in the courtroom, when under pressure of being hanged she goes back to Abigail’s side, accusing John Proctor of witchcraft and Devil-worship.In the courtroom the townspeople witnessed Abigail acting scared of something and telling Mary to not hurt her,as she was really doing nothing,and she got the other girls to join her act.After their act the townspeople start believing her Mary,out of fear of being hang,goes to Mary saying,”No,I love god;I go your way no more,I love god,I bless god...Abby,Abby,I’ll never hurt you more!”(Miller 49) ultimately going back to Abigail’s side in the end.
