Title
In The Crucible, Arthur Miller conveys various themes relating the HUAC trials to the Red Scare and many occurring events in the world today. The Red Scare was a time of fear and agony of communism for many citizens in the United States. In this play, John Proctor is an individual who is well respected in the town of Salem for his hard working reputation. He faces many struggles and life or death situations that test his morals. John struggles through his resistance in a relationship with Abigail, confessing to his sin in the court, and by showing respect for himself and others when he tears up the document proving his confession. In his play, Arthur Miller conveys the theme of standing up for what’s right, even in the worst case of injustice through his character John Proctor. …show more content…
John Proctor has a flirtatious past with Miller’s character, Abigail, which leads to struggles with his wife, Elizabeth Proctor.
In the beginning of the play, John has an affair with Abigail, but this a problem because he is married to Elizabeth. In the town of Salem, this would be considered a sin, lechery, and John could be sentenced to death if someone were to find out. John has to overcome his past with Abigail by resisting her temptations. Later in the play, Abigail tries to flirt with Proctor and win him over. John rejects her by saying, “I may think of you softly from time to time, but I will cut off my hand before I reach for you again. We never touched.” By not giving into Abigail’s ways he shows maturity and
resistance.
Proctor makes countless attempts to reveal Abigail’s scheme to get vengeance against Elizabeth, but is not successful. He calls this “whores vengeance” because he thinks that Abigail is a whore that has a plan to get Elizabeth killed so she can have John. He knows that if he admitted to the affair publicly, then it would ruin his reputation in Salem, but soon realizes that his desire for justice is far more important than his reputation. John breaks down and confesses by telling…….By the times he admits to his sin of lechery, it is too late. When he admitted that he committed lechery, he hoped to expose Abigail’s false doings during the witch trials but was ultimately accused of being a liar and convicted of witch craft.
