Arthur Miller wrote “The Crucible” as a protest paper to the brutality of the Red Scare. The Red
Scare was the fear of communism within the United States. John Proctor, a character in Arthur
Miller’s “The Crucible” was characterizing himself. In any community, the people rely on the power of law and justice to protect them. When the guardians of the law and order misuse their power it brings tragedy upon the town. Arthur Miller and John Proctor both convicted of serious crimes against society, but denied their conviction. Proctor goal is to keep his good name in the society. He successfully achieves his goal using pathos and ethos.
These men are seen noble because they not bend to corrupt the courts, but to convince their pursuers each man had to offer his own story. Miller’s, he admitted to attending certain writer’s meeting that had been sponsored by the communist parties. In John Proctor's case, he admitted to the account of lechery.”But it was a whore’s vengeance, and you must see it;I set myself entirely in your hand”(Miller). To the unworthy of both men, each admitted to his accuser to the situation that would allow them to convince their court beyond reasonable doubt that they were innocent of their charges. John uses ethos to persuade them that he is innocent and to make them feel sorry for him because he using his life to prove that he innocent. Proctor shows sign of being a tragic hero when he attempts to go into court to save his wife and prove the girls wrong. Hower, he end up accusing himself. At this point, John proctor demand “My wife will never die for me! i will bring your guts into your mouth but that goodness will not die for me!”(Miller). This ethos demonstrate his intense love for his wife.
Proctor action reveals that he goes against society to allow his son to be untouched by Reverend
Hale. Both men are great father, but they also share the unforgiven guilt of being bad
