The Crucible Investigative Report
“The Crucible” is a 1953 play written by Arthur Miller. The catastrophic story is set in Salem, a small town in colonial Massachusetts around 1692, ruled by a theocratic society. When women start being accused of witchcraft the atmosphere turns to one of fear, paranoia, and hysteria.
The aim of this task is to give a sense of closure to the play through the passage of time since it ends in a very tragic way. The storyline escalates a conflict to such an extent that every time one thinks that it couldn’t get worse, it does. More and more innocents suffer different consequences throughout the story. The reason I chose an Investigative report is because it is the most appropriate in revealing the true story to the world. Also, the investigation
into the play’s interpretation of the historical events allows for new clues to determine the particular circumstances of the trials. The time frame of the play is particularly compressed, and the action proceeds so quickly that there is little time for foreshadowing. Thus, an investigative report happening a few centuries after the incidents gives it enough time to settle down.
The style of this news report is relatively formal, yet concise since it intends to reveal the truth to the general public. The audience is a new generation of people who are interested in the reality of the trials, the lapses in due process as well as the motifs behind the convictions.
