It shows the hangings of John Proctor, Rebecca, and her sister. What makes this scene so effective, is the pray they speak before they hang. This is left out of the book, but hinted at when Parris said, “Let Rebecca stand upon the gibbet and send up some righteous prayer”(Millar 127). This is exactly what they do in the movie, and it is very effective. The scene helps to show how doubt is build all around in all the characters, as the fact that witches couldn’t recite prayers was commonly accepted, yet these three stood and each recited it perfectly destroying the towns belief in witches. This scene is powerful as they fight back with a prayer, and seem to understand that they will not go in vain.
These changes help enrich the story as they give us a new look into the charters and their emotions which further help to develop the story. I find that the rewrite of the script was a good choice as visuals, help better portray the sheer panic and confusion in the town. And through such means, we way never make these mistakes again.
