The first work of art to I chose was from the Baroque period and it is titled, The Crucifixion of St Peter and its artist is Caravaggio. The second painting I focused on was, Death of Socrates, by Jacques-Louis David. These two works of Art can be compared because of their common theme of death. With death as a common theme, each artist still portrays different views and emotions that are associated with death. Both Artists’ portrayed an important figure in history standing up for their own beliefs, even in the face of death.

The second aspect to focus on is the diagonals that are present in the center. This directly leads you to the old man who is portrayed in a deathly manner. He is being nailed down to a cross. From there you notice the other man who is on his hands and knees and appears to be struggling to lift the old man on the cross. From there one can follow the rope in which the other man appears to be grasping on with a very tight grip. The last figure to notice is the man with his arms wrapped around the old man with nails in his feet. At a final glance the dark, semi colored background is noticed with a shining light coming from the upper left hand corner. The light shines upon the old man who is nailed on the cross. Upon further analysis one can conclude the man who is nailed on the cross is St Peter. St Peter was warned by the Lord that he would be killed like a martyr, and his death would come by crucifixion. The painting done by Caravaggio portrays a dramatic scene, in which Peter was crucified. St Peter appears to be very powerful because of the light that is casted upon him. He is presented with a crabby look on his face and this might be because he has to be crucified upside down. Peter is also
