1. BIOGRAPHICAL CONTEXT (life and works of the author)
The author is Mark Haddon who was born in Northampton and studied English at Uppingham School and Merton College, Oxford. Haddon has won Whitebread book of the year (2003) and Commonwealth Writer’s Prize overall for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. He worked with autistic people as a young man, resulting in knowledge about Asperger syndrome as displayed through the implementation of an autistic main character. His intended audience was adults, but his publisher suggested marketing it to both adults and children. He has claimed to be an atheist, which is displayed through Christopher’s Atheist beliefs and scientific and logical view of the world and death.

This was influenced by Haddon growing up in England and him most likely drawing on his knowledge about his home country to write about the setting with reality. The influence of this is mostly seen when a real-life subway line running from Swindon to London is written about in the novel.

The text was published in 2003 and while the date of when the text is set is not explicitly mentioned it can be assumed it is in a similar time period due as it appears to have modern day technology, norms and beliefs. As it is set in 2003, the characters in the book seems to have more modern views of Asperger’s syndrome, Autism and other related disorders. This influence the novel as it stated that Christopher is able to go to a school that supports his needs, something that would be available in the assumed time period of around 2003, that would have helped shape his
