Christopher just found that Wellington was dead and killed. After a while, the policeman started asking questions, which make him not being able to process his answers and thoughts. At one point he stated, “The policeman looked at me for a while without speaking. Then he said, ‘I’m arresting you for assaulting a police officer.’ This made me feel a lot calmer because it is what policeman say on television and in films.” (Haddon 9). Normally in a desperate situation, people would be frantic since the police are going to arrest them. In Christopher’s case, however, getting arrested made him calm down and not to be afraid of the things piling up in his mind. He feels stressed by the questions, but by the fact that Christopher feels calm when he was being arrested is rather ironic and strange at the same time. Basically, this whole strange situation just proves that Christopher’s way of thinking of each situation is almost completely different from those who are perfectly
