Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse: 5 October 1881 (Surrey, England) ~ 14 February 1975 (Southampton, New-York), died of a heart attack English humorist, playwright, and lyricist: novels, short stories, plays, poems, song lyrics and numerous piece of journalism.
Uninterested in politics and world affairs. Enormous popular success and his writings continue to be widely read. Admired by contemporaries. He is in the upper class society. He has seen the WW1 and 2, and Cold War Took a modest attitude in his own work.
An unique style of writing and gives a rich vocabulary of slang to some of his characters. Known for his skills for detailed construction and development of the plots. Awarded an honorary doctorate of letters by Oxford University (1939). The Queen named him Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (1975).
Story Analysis:
The Custody of the Pumpkin could be referred as a comic fiction short story. It tells about the arrogance and social class difference that Lord Emsworth, the protagonist, has and how obsessed and selfish a man can be. The idea behind the whole story is about an Earl, that get obsessed with pumpkins and takes careless of his son.
This story uses figures of speech such as: repetition and exaggeration to create humour. The category differences between the characters are outstanding. Making seem another perfect stand out of Wodehouse work. He used a mock serious style as though narrating a heroic poem or story.
PG Wodehouse is famous for his involved plots where layer upon layer of complications unfold. Here there are only three problems – Freddie’s engagement to Aggie, McAllister’s departure and Lord Emsworth’s likely arrest for removing flowers.
