The Day I Will Never Forget

The Day I Will Never Forget The hardest thing I had to face in my life when I was younger was when I was thirteen. That day would be July 14, 2005 and it is the day my grandmother passed away. My family and I went through so much about seven months prior to her passing. We got through the tragedy. She was eighty-two years old at the time. I will never forget her telling me the night before that she had to go to the doctors for a check-up meanwhile I was in school but when I got home, I would go right up to my grandmas. We lived on the same property. That day I went up there I remember her telling me that she had cancer and the doctors gave her six months to live, maximum. I was devastated and I didn’t know what to think. I was so close with her so it was hard for me to handle. We moved into her house three months before she went and we took care of her while no one else. That summer morning on July 14, 2005, I remember my parents, my brother and I sitting on the porch. My cousin came over to see her around 8:30 and then she left because she had to head to work. It was ten minutes to nine and I laid on the couch that was located on the porch. I remember how everything was set up. I remember the living room, the porch, just everything in that house. The couch was a sand tan color with a floral design and a table diagonal from where it sat. Nine o’clock rolled around, my father walked in to see if she was alright but when he came back to the porch he said, “She’s gone”. Those words hit me like a meteorite falling out of the sky hitting Earth. I immediately started crying because it just didn’t seem real to me. The crazy thing is a few days before she passed I made a picture of a cross with the date and year of when she was going to die and my picture was right. It was just scary. That day and the next few weeks were chaos. My father had to call all the family, set up the obituary and the funeral

My grandfather passed away and it sent my family and i into a turmoil. It was so sudden and fast we knew we had to prepare for our future without him. That day was the first day ever that my whole family and I sat in silence. No conversations, No cracking jokes or laughter, just silence. It was a day of sadness, but as the strong family we are, we lifted each other up and we accepted it and we made a promise to each other that we would never leave each other's sides. That day made me realize how much our family is united and this day put our strength to the test and we didn't let it break us. It actually brought us even…

On August 28th of this year, my grandfather passed away. He was 94 years old and died peacefully in his sleep at his home in the Dominican Republic. Three weeks later, on September 16, his wife and partner for 60 years, my grandmother, passed under similar conditions. While I cannot say for certainty, I believe she died of heartbreak. She was never the same after losing her partner, her best friend and the love of her life. My family and I were informed via telephone the day after their passing because their rural community of San Cristobal is frequently without phone service. I remember both phone calls rather vividly, as my rather had placed both on speaker phone. I remember the heartbreak that I felt, the devastation, the loneliness, but I do not remember anyone asking what date and time either of them passed. Instead, we all cried together and embraced each other. Particularly in the loss of my grandmother, I realize how death can impact a person's soul. My…

That was the day that my grandpa passed away. Every single part of that date is engrained in my memory. My parents had driven up to Wisconsin, and my older sister Lauren drove home for college to stay with me. It wasn’t out of the normal for my parents to quickly leave, so I didn’t think much of it. I remember going to hang out with Tatum, my best friend of the time. It was a nice day outside, so of course we were outside playing on the trampoline and doing all our weird routines like we always did. Her family, who was like a second family to me, decided to go out to eat so they brought me along. We went to La Charitas. I remember how Mrs. Teeple pulled out a funny card game for us to play, and I remember Tatum cutting out faces in her tortilla, making us all laugh. When we got back to the house we saw that my sister called, so I said bye to the Teeples and walked one minute down the road to my house. Lauren, who is one of the most emotional in the family, was left with the task of telling me that my grandpa had passed away. I had just grabbed a snack of chocolate cheerios as she started to tell me the news. I didn’t know how to react, so I ran into the basement directly to the furthest corner I could find. Lauren tried talking to me, but I wanted to be by myself. One of the hardest things I have ever done was talking to my dad on the phone after finding out. He called to tell me the plans, that he was coming home to get us, and…

Ever since I was a young girl, my grandmother and I held a connection that was beyond any connection that I have ever had with someone. I grew up with her and she taught me many things that have shaped the person I am today. She was one of the very few people who really understood me and I valued her deeply. My grandmother passed away on March 17th, 2014. It was the most tragic event that has ever occurred in my life. Words could not describe the hurt I felt when it finally sunk in that I would never be able to see her again. I had a very hard time coping with her death, and it took a very negative toll on me. I started to question my life and what it really meant. What made it even worse is that I usually do not open up about any of my feelings so it was really hard for me to deal with this situation and make it seem like I was okay. I built a wall between my feelings and the world and I started feeling very isolated and alone which made things ten times worse. I lost connections with myself, the people around me and even God because I blamed him for taking away someone who meant so much to me. I began to think that life was worthless and that we are here for such a short time with no eventual purpose. I then grew older and became more mature. Life was throwing itself at me and I began to appreciating things more. I realized that even though life is short and maybe there might be no purpose,…

It was 2009 and I had been in sixth grade for a couple of months. I was on the phone with one of my friends from school when my mom called through my door for me to come out into the living room. I ignored her and kept talking for a few minutes when she called me out again. I rolled my eyes and told my friend I would call her right back. I walked into the living room and it seemed odd to me that both my sisters and dad were all out there too. I watched my mom take a deep breath with my dad by her side. As she began to speak her voice shook and gloss covered her eyes. “The doctors found a lump in my last mammogram.” she said. “It came back as cancer. I’m going to have to get treatment but I’m going to be okay.” No one else said a word, we all…

I still remember the day like it was yesterday, when I got the news about my mom being diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. Back then when I was in the seventh grade, there was not really much to know about it but that when someone had cancer they would die. My mom being the closest person to me and her being the only parent that was by my side, thinking that she no longer would be. When this time came there was nothing else for me to do but step into my mother's shoes of becoming the most responsible one in the house. This was the most difficult obstacle that has ever come my way due to the fact that I was only 12 or 13 around the time and I had to take care of a newborn baby while my mom was away getting treatment. She was gone for two…

I remember being asked if I wanted to go to his funeral or not. At first I didn’t want to deal with it and just wanted to hide away from all of it. Then I found out my mom was going and I thought it would be nice to be with her out of a facility. My grandfather died of kidney cancer, but since 9/11 was going on while he was in the hospital, they said he woke up thinking he was in it. This probably happen because everyone that visited him watched the coverage while they were in the room. Even though he had died, that week wasn’t so bad because I got to spend it with my mom. Although, the week coming home was unbearable because with her I was able to forget about all of our problems and pretend everything was back to normal. The events of 9/11 and my grandfather passing made me realize that even though my family was going through a lot, with the kindness of those around us, we were going to survive. I didn’t live with my mom again until I was 20 and she needed help with my brother, but I kept moving forward in my…

Once all of my siblings were home, my parents came into the living room. I knew this couldn’t be good because my mom had a puffy face like she had just got done crying (which she had). She started to say “Your grandpa and grandma Spraker came over today…”, then she started to cry. My dad had to finish what she was going to say. He said that my grandmother had lung cancer, and she had 2-6 months to live. I was in shock, I didn’t want to believe…

A challenging situation, I had dealt with was when my father died of lung cancer. When he passed away, I was only eight at the time. Being the youngest, I took charge, by being optimistic to my family have them be joyful again and to not be a burden to mother and older sister, so I suppressed myself from talking about my father or how I felt. As a result, I stayed at home the day after he died, instead of being at school for a week or so. A few days later, I unexpectedly received a humongous dark yellow folder with autumn themed smelly stickers, as I opened the folder, filled with letters from my second-grade classmates. Asking me to come back to school and telling me how sorry they were about my dad. I still have these letters in my drawer…

After the Terror numbed, I couldn’t allow self-pity when there were so many important things I needed to do. I became an adult December of my Junior year of High School when I realized I needed to take responsibility for myself and my family when my mom was unable to.…

At age 11, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was caught early enough that she had a good chance of overcoming it but, at 11, anything that ended with the word "cancer" sounded like a death sentence to me. Overnight, a previously silent genetic mutation had flipped my world upside down. Going through chemotherapy and radiation was taxing on my mother both physically and emotionally, as one might expect, but it was also taxing on my entire family. This experience was the first time I ever truly knew how it felt to endure hardship in my family. Prior to this, the most difficult experience of my life was when we had to put our cats down, so this was a major adjustment. I share this story because it has been a major influence on the person I am and the priorities I have…
