The Battle of Gettysburg started on July 1,1863 and ended on July 3, 1863. There were two armies that fought during the battle the Army of Northern Virginia ( the Confederacy) commanded by General Robert E. Lee and soldiers from the Army of the Potomac (the Union) commanded by General George G.Meade. He commanded many more deadly battles.After the three days of fighting, the Union defeated the Confederates. More than 165,000 soldiers fought, about 51,000 were casualties of the battle ( killed, wounded, captured, or missing) The Union army had 82,289 soldier engaged, but there were 23,049 casualties. May 8, 1864 is when the battle started and ended on May 21, 1864. The battle was located at Spotsylvania County, Virginia. This battle began after the battle of Wilderness. After the 2 weeks of battle there was no clear winner. The generals who led the battle were General Ulysses S. Grant and General George G. Meade, they commanded the Union. And general Robert E. Lee who commanded the Confederate side. The Union had 50,000 more troops than the Confederate. The confederate lost 23 percent of their troops,and both side had 32,000 casualties. Also during the battle there were 5 generals who died, three from the Union side and two from the Confederate side. After General Grant had no success, he decided the give up his location and move on. This battle was one of the longest
