During the 19th century, women’s position in society consisted of being a wife and homemaker. Women weren’t advised to educated themselves or even hold a job. When a woman got married they didn’t have, “the right to own their own property, keep their own wages, or sign a contract. In addition, all women were denied the right to vote” (Rights for Women [RFW], 2007). Women gaining the right to vote is otherwise known as Woman Suffrage. “The woman suffrage movement was a full-fledged political movement, with its own press, its own political imagery, and its own philosophers, organizers, lobbyists, financiers, and fundraisers” (RFW, 2007). This spurred them to host the first ever convention for women’s rights. The 1848 convention took place at Seneca Falls, New York. During this convention Stanton made a speech call the Deceleration of Sentiments (RFW, 2007). In the Declaration of Sentiments Stanton demands equal treatment. Not only men are created equal, but women too. She voices the bondage that women face being under men. From no representation in legislation to having no control over her property, and their self-worth weighing on their husbands merit. Stanton then proposes resolutions to the injustices that women were facing. In the solitude of self, Stanton focuses on seeing the everyday woman of that time as an individual apart from a man and more than a home maker. A woman is her own vesicle, who is in charge of her own destiny. She deserves the right to act as an individual, and also have a say in government. We are born alone and die alone. There is no other person the same, no other person shares our biological make up. We must be responsible for one self. Woman seek no pity and in times of distress and anxiety, they too can suffer alone. Stanton hammers home that woman should not be denied an education for they are individuals who have their own ideals, goals, and cognition. They have the ability to contribute and while men may take the lead, they too should be allowed to take complete reign over the governing and actions for their lone soul. (Stanton, 1999).
