Beowulf is a historical and elegiac Anglo-Saxon poem. Religion is an irritable subject and one of the main topics. The heroic character Beowulf is a depiction of superior and God. Grendel is the delineation of the Pagan beliefs as well as the corrupt in the world. This poem is composed of internal and external complications between the Pagan’s and the Christian’s beliefs. Even though Paganism is meticulously extended throughout the text, there are several references about Christianity. Keywords and phrases such as “fate”, “hoping for hell’s support, and many more help the reader understand the different religions that are visible in this poem. The anonymous author of Beowulf thrived with the legendary poem by embracing Paganism, Christianity, and the conflicts of both religions.…
Beowulf is the stepping stone for the creation of many stories of good vs. evil, ending with the hero receiving unending praise and adoration. With that many of the people who read of the epic poem now relate to it on many levels, my belief is that the Christian elements throughout this poem make it more intriguing to the modern day peruser. The author of the poem is unknown but based on the style of wording used and the Paganistic elements it is believed to have originally been scribed by Christian monks. Beowulf is a 'story' that has been passed down for generations being used as entertainment by the Anglo-Saxons in 10th century England. The biblical jewels hidden throughout this story not only help a reader to relate to the author’s work…
Another significant factor in how Beowulf is a Christian poem is that Beowulf is a Christ-like figure. An example of that would be how everyone looks at him; “Bold and strong minded, had driven affliction off, purged Herot clean. He was happy, now with that night’s fierce work; the Danes had been served as he’d boasted he’d serve them; Beowulf, a prince of the Geats, had killed Grendel” (400-404). Beowulf is set at such high expectations, since he sacrificed his life to protect his people just like Christ did when he died on the…
After thinking about the past years of my life I have found few major moments of joy; which just goes to show how rare they are and that if we do not recognize them they will just fly on by. Occurrences such as these are something that need to be held on to and cherished, and that is just what I have done.…
Beowulf was originally written as a pagan oral tradition before the Christian monks infused their religion into it. The epic hero showed his faith to God as he battled the monsters and depicted the world of Christianity. However, the ideas in the poem are presented in both Christian God and pagan power which exemplifies Wyrd. Christianity and paganism are at opposite ends of the religious spectrum and each represent different beliefs and customs. Christians believe and follow the teachings of Christ and depend on the Bible for Spiritual guidance, but paganism is based on the belief and worshiping of other gods through sacrifices. Interspersed in each line is both elements, from the prologue to its end, each element tells its own story.…
Many human characteristics derive from the imperative trait of self-interest. This egoistic personality can be observed through the ages. A resulting characteristic from this self-centered behavior is the ambition for a lasting legacy. Self-centered behavior creates an aspiration for a legacy because people want their own names to be well remembered. Therefore, a legacy can create an illusion of immortality and have an eternal impact on future generations. In the epic poem Beowulf, Shield Sheafson, Hrothgar, and Beowulf display a will for a legacy. The Scop reveals the desire for a lasting legacy as an archetypal human trait because a legacy decreases the fear of death by providing a form of immortality and as a result can be seen throughout human history.…
A modern day hero is someone who chooses to make sacrifices without being asked to do so by anyone. Many may look up to a person and say that one day they’d like to have some of those attributes a modern day hero has. In the epic poem Beowulf, thought to be written by a christian monk, the central character and hero is Beowulf, who is looked up to by his people of Sweden, the Geats. Consequently a modern day hero that I admire immensely would be a nurse.…
In this epic heroic poetry, Beowulf (8th- early 11th century) the author which remains a mystery suggests that Christianity will overpower or transition the early medieval Scandinavia which is pagan into Christianity due to the fact that Beowulf being the people’s hero and main hope references God more than once which shows the introduction of Christianity context. The author specifically references the Christian story of Cain and Abel which shows the slow but growing introduction of Christianity to the pagan early medieval Scandinavia. The author purposely ties/connects the main hero, Beowulf, with early references of Christianity in order to show that although Beowulf is the narrator and is not pagan, his trust in god allowed him to protect…
However, the story tells that there was a constant fear of invasion that plagued the Scandinavian people (SparkNotes on Beowulf). Beowulf is, therefore, a fine combination of Christian-pagan elements that together express the heroic code of honor. There are details of pagan religious traditions and funeral rituals and at the same time, there is the use of Christian phrases. The main ethical grounds of the poem are undoubtedly secular that display fidelity, generosity, and bravery while the hero gains a long-lasting fame of great expeditions carried out throughout the history (Bjork and…
The epic poem Beowulf is a tale of a warrior, named Beowulf, and the events that lead to his death. One of the main concerns of the epic poem was whether or not it is of pagan or Christian origin, or whether it has pagan or Christian influences. Even though the poem appeared to be originally a pagan story, there are many clues in the text that point to Christian influence and tradition. Beowulf is essentially a Christian story with Christian customs: that man's survival depends on the protection of God, that earthly gifts come from God, and also that Beowulf is a Christ-figure.…
In Beowulf christianity reveals itself, in which the reader emotions may feel sympathy from the ideas in relates to the bible. The characters in Beowulf take on different roles that are similar to the characters in the bible. The setting also includes christian elements for example, Herot Hall that Hrothgar built in honor of his fame, were celebrations were held with his men. In Beowulf lines 14- 15 describes celebration and peace in Herot Hall: “As now warriors sang of their pleasure: So Hrothgar’s men lived happy in his hall.” Even though Herot hall is the place were the celebration occurred; however, Grendel’s hatred for Herot’s celebration causes him swooped in while Hrothgar’s men were drunk and killed them all. Another Christianity Element discussed in the Beowulf is Beowulf heroism, how he uses God through all of his battles. Before the battle against Grendel, Beowulf says in lines 174-175: “God must decide/Who will be given to death’s cold grip.” In this quote Beowulf is basically saying that God will decide who will win between him and Grendel in battle because he requested to fight with his hands alone. Upon Beowulf’s death from his last battle with the dragon, he thank God from the heavens above for allowing his…
Beowulf, after defeating Grendel, has gained a reputation and has proved his strength, “But Beowulf longed only for fame”(lines 502-503). He wished to be at the top of the food chain and strive for greatness, which is why he went after Grendel’s mother. This relates to most humans in the quest for success. In most jobs, the goal is to work up in the business to earn more money as a higher position is acquire. While working to get a better job, the trade off is it gets much harder. The workload gets bigger and life becomes more difficult, but that is the price that has to be payed in order to have an easy more enjoyable life after retirement. Beowulf displayed this when he fought Grendel’s mother, knowing that he would increase his reputation…
Throughout Beowulf, the three most important values are kinship, courage, and honor. While these are all independent cultural and societal values, they work together to reflect a culture that puts a great deal of emphasis on someone holding true to his word, particularly because the reputation and honor of his family depends on it. Beowulf is very super humanly strong, and goes through many battles with many creatures and people in his world. Im going to tell you about the great leader he was, the way he excels in strength and skill, and how he values honor and duty.…
Throughout the poem, many examples of pagan and Christian elements are shown. However, I do have one favorite Christian element that I came across when reading. One of the acts, “Further Celebration at Heorot,” Hrothgar remind Beowulf of the Greek lesson tragedians. He also tells him the one of Christian philosophy:”… that wealth, accumulated through the grace of God, must be shared unselfishly.” This is used to remind Beowulf of himself, and his pride. Throughout the story, at times he shows too much pride and forgets about God and just wants the treasures that come with the “victories.” Through the story Beowulf acknowledges God as his protector. When Beowulf compares his battle with Grendel's mother, he states that, "The fight would have ended straightaway if God had not guarded me.” He gives thanks to God, for allowing him to live. But, there is also a pagan element shown in this scene as well. For instance, back then the myths were capable of having superhuman powers to defeat others. In every scene with Beowulf almost, there was a sense of mystical protection on all of his actions. However, in every action Beowulf made, he needed God's protection and that was to be earned. He believed if he respected his values then God would protect him. It was a give/give situation. He shows this again when fighting Grendel's mother in her cave, he sees a weapon hanging…
We traveled to 10th century Denmark, then I landed near a great hold in Arhus. I entered the nearby mead hall and listened to the performance of a local Scop. He told the tale of Beowulf, but it was completely wrong. Apparently it matched up with the 2007 Robert Zemeckis movie, which was a rather weird adaption that tried to play on the concept of Beowulf story being full of half-truths. Yet I had seen the real Beowulf in action, and can tell of his exploits thoroughly. I told the Scop he was all wrong, in that Grendel and his mother were descended from Cain, not ancient Sea Demons. Hrothgar was an honorable king, not some drunk geriatric fool. Then I also stated how Grendel and the dragon were not the offspring of humans, but instead were…
