The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson who a future president of the United States prior to writing the document. The foundation document was written in 1776. Thomas Jefferson directed his writing towards the king and the British empire to express his thoughts on being free using judgemental emotion. One way the Declaration of Independence is considered to be a cornerstone of American government is because of the independence it gave the people. It gave independance, because no one has the right to rule over free people. Jefferson says that the laws of nature and the laws of mankind are endowed by the creator.
