The “Definition of Man” by Kenneth Burke defines the structure of man through the use of symbol(s). Burke continues to define a man through the use of examples from his past that identify key moments in his life in which embody the motivation behind his thesis. After examining the essay, our team dissected the key points that provide the most support to Burke’s thesis. They include the following; man is the symbol making animal, man is the inventor of the negative, separated from his natural condition by instruments of his own making, goaded by the spirit of hierarchy and the concept of rotten with perfection. Self-disclosure is another branch of self-presentation as it serves an important relational function, helping us to connect with others. The three key areas to consider in relation to self-disclosure are: trust, intimacy, and power (Paci, 2017). Throughout the meetings held with our team during the duration of the assignment, the two key areas that related to self-disclosure are: trust and power. Trust highlights the need to feel secure and comfortable with another person in order to confide in them. In order to display trust and allow for a cohesive team effort throughout the assignment, each member of our team shared personal information about one another. This process allowed for our team to work as one and trust that our decision making was appropriate when finalizing and coming to our conclusions. Power is the being able to have an influence in another person's actions. By having an influential ability, you are also given a place of authority. Although there was no influence on others during this assignment, we ensured that there was an equal power distribution throughout the group and that we were all treated and respected as equals. In other words, no team member had authority over the other team members as everyone contributed equally and to their own personal
