This summer I read The Diary of Anne Frank. This book was a diary written by
Anne Frank who was a young Jewish girl living during the German occupation of
Holland, and was translated by B.M. Mooyaart-Doubleday. In her diary she writes about what her and her mother, father, and older sister Margot went through because of their culture and beliefs. In 1942, Anne and her family went into hiding to avoid being sent to a concentration camp by the Nazi’s.

In July 1942, the Frank family was fortunate that they had planned a safe living
space to hide from the Germans. They lived in her father’s office building on the 3rd floor in the attic for 2 years. They shared their living space with another
family and later on a dentist. The “Secret Annex” as they called it successfully hid the two families and the young man from the Germans for a period of tim=. Fear was spread across Europe to the Jewish with the thought of death or being sent to a concentration camp. Anne was only 12 when she and her family went into hiding. It was hard for her to be separated from friends and the outside world. Anne received her dairy “kitty” for her birthday. “Kitty” was her friend that she told everything to while forced into isolation.
Anne’s dairy reveled that she was intelligent and perceptive. After two years she proved she had perseverance and determination.

Anne’s story effected me emotionally and helped me understand then pain she
went through because of her beliefs and religion. A person who is interested in history
would find this book enlightening. I believe its an important book to read because people should be educated on the suffering the Jewish people endured in Europe during World War II. Reading this novel confirms the pride I have in our country that allows us freedom of religion.
