Democracy and Oligarcy as forms of government have been in existence for a long period of time, both terms first appeared in ancient Greek political and philosophical thought. Both forms of government exist in the modern world, but which form of government is more better, there is a question. So, in my essay I will compare Democratic and Oligarchy Governments to understand which form of them is the best. It is important that we understand what is democracy and oligarchy, so that we can understand the difference between oligarcy and democracy better. Democracy is a form of government which gives every citizen equal say in the decisions. The participation can either be direct or indirect. Direct representation was possible in the olden days in Greece, however, now it is through indirect representation every citizen is able to voice his opinion. The basic principle of this form of government is popular sovereignty. Oligarchy is a unique form of government in which a few wealthy and powerful people run the nation. These powerful people are top military officers, or those having great political influence. In Ancient Greece there were two different major forms of government, Oligarchy and Democracy. The two city-states that best represent each form of government were Sparta (oligarchy) and Athens (democracy). For that specific time period the oligarchy government in Sparta was better for the Ancient Greeks than the democratic government in Athens. The government in Athens worried more about the citizens of its city-state then its own well-being.
