Setting (time and place)
The Divine wind is set in Broome, Australia in 1942 during the time of WW2. Quote: ‘’Where double-storeyed dwellings breathed over one another across a gap no wider than a small car’’ Technique: personification to emphasize the lack of privacy in such a small town portraying that everyone is close and synchronized.

Key event pre-change
The climax of the book is the death of Mitsys father Zeke Sennousuke who died because of the fatal decision made by Michael Penrose to take a boat out too early in the season. Quote: ‘’My voice sounded puny, as if this were a nightmare and no words would come’’. This quote foreshadows the rising conflict that occurs between the two races and the outbreak of the war that makes local Japanese people the enemy.
