The backdrop of World War II in A Separate Peace emphasizes the microcosmic war that is occurring in Devon. Military language that is used emphasizes the parallelism of the actual war and Gene’s war throughout the novel. Man’s destructive actions portray man’s inhumanity to man; eradication and killings of the war depict how cruel man can be. Finny’s inability to cope with the cruelty of this world causes him to become oblivious to what’s actually happening. Gene’s constant hatred and envy leads him to loose himself in Finny. He characterizes Finny to have no flaws and believes, “There was no harm in envying your best friend a little” (25). This little envy grew to the extent where Gene had no control of his action and destroyed his best friend’s future.…

As summer turns to winter and Finny comes back to Devon there are a lot of things going on all around Gene. With snow covered fields and ice covered rivers there isn’t much to do other than work. As Gene works on the railroads clearing snow out of the way for trains, a train of soldiers goes past, igniting a larger fire in Gene and Brinker, a fellow classmate and friend.who convinces Gene to enlist with him. As Gene is returning to his dorm, he discovers Finny is back at school. One morning as Gene and Finny awake and Finny is complaining about no maids yet again because of the war, Brinker comes to carry out his plans to enlist with Gene. Finny talks sense into them and they both decide against enlisting. Finally the war begins to settle in their minds and the winter becomes more bearable. “ For the war was no longer eroding the peaceful summertime stillness I had prized so much at Devon, and although the playing fields were crusted under a foot of congealed snow and the river was now a hard grey-white line of ice between gaught trees, peace had come back to Devon for me (Knowles 109).” Now that the war was no longer the main concern, Gene was now able to find peace in the winter, as he had in the summer. Due to the war’s frightening and poignant nature, moments of peace become more meaningful. Peace is important because, like the eye of a storm, it provides a tranquil and unperturbed moment allowing for regroupment before the storm (in this case the war) sweeps you up again. Later as the jaws of war begin its second bite and people are getting swallowed up, Gene finds it more and more difficult to find…

Gene constantly compares his faults and triumphs to those of Finny. “If I was head of the class on Graduation Day and made a speech and won the Ne Plus Ultra Scholastic Achievement Citation, then we would both have come out on top, we would be even, that was all. We would be even…” (pg. 52). The previous quote shows how Gene sees Finny more as his competition than his friend. Gene believes that all of Finny’s actions are taken to better himself in their competition. Thus, Gene feels that Finny is taking measures to ensure Gene’s failure academically. “Finny had deliberately set out to wreck my studies. That explained blitzball, that explained the nightly meetings of the Super Suicide Society, that explained his insistence that I share all his diversions.” (pg. 53). This supports my previous statement that Gene is paranoid of Finny’s motives. Gene could never believe that his friend simply wants to spend time with him, instead he receives it as an act of…

The seasonal shift from winter to summer represents the boys’ fall into maturity, proving the theme that the loss of innocence is painful and unavoidable. While introducing the Devon School, Gene explains early on that "During the winter[,] most of [the dormitory Masters] regard anything unexpected in a student with suspicion...[but on] clear June days...they appear to uncoil...[and] a streak of tolerance is detectable" (Knowles 23). The Devon School, one of the most flourishing and strict boarding schools in New Hampshire, takes boys and toughens them into men using a rigorous lifestyle. In the summer, however, the teachers let the boys skip meals and ditch school. Gene suspects that the Devon faculty lessens their grip over the boys because he and the other Lower Middlers, two ranks below the seniors, remind the teachers of youthful peace. Therefore, the students’ summer session symbolizes a naïve phase in their lives before they reach the vast confusions and troubles of adulthood. However, when Gene’s dormitory Master, Mr.Ludsbury, returns to the school, Mr.Ludsbury chides Gene, lecturing that “everything went straight to seed during the summer” and he declares that he will “put… the dormitory back together”(Knowles 81). With the inescapable coming of winter, order returns to…

    Double Effect

The Doctrine of Double Effect (DDE) is often invoked to explain the permissibility of an individual’s action that has two outcomes: one where the end result can be foresee and is good, the other that can also be foresee and is bad (Goldworth, Amnon, 2008). In other words, this doctrine is used to justify cases such as where doctors give drugs to patients to relieve severe pain (good result) knowing that doing so may shorten their life span (bad result). Under DDE, this action is justifiable because the physician intention is not aiming directly at killing the patients. The bad result of the patient’s death is a side effect of the good result of reducing the patient’s distressing pain. However, this doctrine is also a subject of controversy,…

As we all know there is a serious problem in Jason’s family, as to the reason why he was not available to meet and discuss our project in the past couple of days. I want to propose a policy for communicating with every team member when problems arise. Frist, I propose that we all exchange phone numbers and get a clear understanding of when we are all available to talk, in case of unexpected occurrences. Second, I also want us, to use “GroupMe,” which is a mobile application that allows the user to send a text to everyone in the group by using only one phone number. This will make sure everyone receives the important message effectively and efficiently. Third, I ask to not hold anything behind, and let the group know if something is wrong. Holding anything behind will get the group confused and disorganized, which could lead to bigger problems. These three proposed steps will keep everyone updated when unanticipated complications arise.
