The Effect of Globalization The world today is becoming much more globalized. Globalization is the spread of cultures and ideas through the interaction of people across the world. With the addition of new technology, something that happens in one area of the world can now affect different areas on the other side of the world. In “Case Study: Global Issues,” “Think Again Globalization“ by Moises Nam, and “Social Implications of Globalization: Can New Ways of Learning Humanize our Global Institutions?” by Paul Cappon, the authors describe how changes bring “certain social implications” and “real issues.” They explain how new technology that is intended to help society is also hurting it economically, politically, and socially, but they also suggest ways to make adjustments to the new society.
The author of “Case Study: Global Issues” explains that globalization has become more enhanced throughout time because of technology. The author uses a quote from the scholar Sumner Twill, saying that “processes of economic, political, and cultural change across the world [that have resulted] in increased social connectedness as well as opportunities for social confrontation among new people” (361). Newer technology has allowed the world to become a smaller place. Everyone in the world is now a phone call or e-mail away, but different things globalize at different rates. Economic, political, and cultural changes will globalize at different rates, if they globalize at all. Globalization is not just for one invention or idea, but also for different aspects of life.
The author does not think that globalization is always a good thing. The author also includes that globalization has resulted in companies that are too powerful. An example of one of these companies is Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart has the ability to choose its suppliers and decide which of those will be successful or harmed. Charles Fischman said that Wal-Mart “has sped up
