1.3 Research Background
It is important these days for companies to adopt an attitude that knows how to deal with the economic situation but also the expectations of stakeholders. In order to remain competitive and sustainable, companies must consider the environment that surrounded them. Although it is complex and constantly evolving, companies must make short- and long-term decisions.
It is simple to see that organizations today have more power and influence in society than before. Therefore, according to Habish et al (2005), "The notion of corporate social responsibility today functions as an emblem, that the company themselves rise towards a consensual “social revolution” that will eventually benefit all the stakeholders of our society".
It is because of environmental problems and natural disasters, that companies face greater difficulties in terms of social responsibility. This is why they must take their share of responsibility and therefore make decisions that allow the company to remain sustainable.

This is due to the use of an environmental strategy, coupled with good social responsibility that Total was able to pull ahead of the game and become a key leader in the petroleum sector. In addition, it demonstrated to an exemplary social responsibility since it has created the Total Foundation. The Total Foundation was created in 1992 following the Earth Summit in Rio, to support research on marine biodiversity and contribute to the protection of the oceans.
