Since the popularisation of the Great Man theory in 1840s by Thomas Carlyle and the counter-thesis by Herbert Spencer in 1860, they have been countless surveys and publications in the last one hundred years on the question – ‘Are great leaders born, bred or both?’. Most recent surveys by the
Center for Creative Leadership in 2012 and Professor J Barling in 2014, whilst have shed some light on the views of the 361 global and 400 Canadian top executives respectively, still have not provided a robust framework for operationalisation of leadership and performance potential assessment.
David McClelland’s 1960 Occupation Competency concept which focused on traits and motive propositions used to consistently distinguish outstanding from typical performance in a given role, and 1973 seminal paper entitled ‘Testing for Competence Rather than for Intelligence’, have created waves of interest to better understand the relationship between leadership, competency and performance. Again, whilst there have been numerous researches, majority of them have centred on seeking for empirical evidences to fit theoretical conceptual frameworks of the researchers.
