The Elephant Vanishes By Haruki Murakami
I chose "The Elephant Vanishes" by Haruki Murakami. This episode is that the elephant and its zookeeper disappeared from the zoo, except for the part that the speaker witnesses where the elephant becomes smaller. there is not a mysterious story. According to the newspaper, People in the town realized that there were no elephants in May 18h. Iron holds, which had been tied to the elephant's legs, were left there with locks on them. The zookeeper also disappeared with the elephant. The article took the expression "Elephant has escaped", but it is obvious that the elephant does not escape. Because iron bars that are left locked, then there are no footprints. Obviously, the elephant has vanished. "Needless to say, however, neither the newspaper
nor the police nor the mayor was willing to admit—openly, at least—that the elephant had vanished" (Murakami, n.d., para. 41).
The man meets a woman who works as a magazine editor. They were singles to each other. He talked to her about the elephant story. However, there is no progress on their relationship.
I already know Author's work seems always like this climax. This end states "Amid the endless surge and ebb of everyday life, interest in a missing elephant could not last forever. And so a number of unremarkable months went by, like a tired army marching past a window" (Murakami, n.d., para. 49). It is not a clear ending how the elephant vanished. What I'm interested in is that such story makes us suppose the end, and discuss with each other.
