The Elephant Wrestler Summary
Stanley Fish’s notion of an interpretive community explains why people are likely to agree or disagree on a particular subject. People are members of different interpretive communities based on codes and conventions – that is, they have similar life-experiences and were exposed to similar environments. The members of the same community share the same codes and conventions; and this is the reason why they agree or disagree. A few reviews of a restaurant, ‘The Elephant Wrestler’, has been collected from Yelp to demonstrate Fish’s notion, and explain why it problematizes the notion that an interpreter’s response is merely subjective.

A common factor between the reviewers of ‘The Elephant Wrestler’ is that they have dined inside the restaurant. This would put them into a community of people who have dined at

Another similarity between the reviewers is that they have chosen to eat at this restaurant due to hunger or thirst. These are all similar codes and conventions this community of reviewers has. Due to the group of people that have dined at ‘The Elephant Wrestler’, one would then expect the reviewers to agree and disagree on the same aspects of the restaurant. However, the reviews on Yelp have been diverse; some positive, and some negative. One of the positive reviews has come from Christine L., where she states “Great place to grab a drink with friends … You’ll love this place as soon as you get in the door”. Christine has given the restaurant a rating of four out of five stars. Despite such a glowing review, she has suggested an area where the restaurant may improve, “If the waitress here could be more passionate, that’ll be wonderful”. A review by Francisca C., has also criticised the wait-staff at ‘The Elephant Wrestler’. She states, “We politely asked the waitress to double

The environment and atmosphere of this restaurant is a very sketchy and unprofessional feeling. The servers make customers feel that they are a bother to them. The music that plays all day long is country, blasting over the restaurant, which made it hard to hear anyone talk. The inside is not kept up either. Parts of the ceiling were falling onto tables and the floor and the server simply stated that it was because of the rain but never did anything about it. The bathrooms…

Often overlooked in the story of Colonial Enlightenment and The Great Awakening is the unequivocally decisive role that it played in providing an encouragement to pursue a just and harmonious way of existence in life, such a way that would bring Republicanism to the forefront of Colonial Political debate. Whitefield speaks of the utter necessity to pursue a cause that you know to be righteous no matter the cost. When Whitefield states “and that their professing themselves to be his followers, would call them to a constant state of voluntary suffering and self-denial.” he is in fact referencing the emergence of Christianity through the journeys of apostles and persecution of the Religion in its youth and inception. Whitefield’s words relate…

First off, the food has been amazing every time I have been there. This time I ate the chicken critters (tenders) with steak fries and green beans and it was very delicious. We didn’t wait maybe ten minutes from getting our appetizer and we already had our entrée. To me that is an excellent waiting time considering it was fresh food. Also the price is very understandable considering the amount of food I got. Overall I would rate the food a ten, it was amazing and always has been.…

Stated is what I observed: • During the whole time that I was observing, no workers came up to me • I observed that out of all the sauces provided in the sauce bar, creamy garlic was the most popular • All sides were made before customers arrived and were arranged in the middle of the kitchen in metal tubs. This could be for easy access and faster serving time. • Why did customers prefer sitting down and eating at the restaurant rather than ordering to go? • Why did a majority of customers come in groups rather than alone? • I observed two interviews that occurred in the restaurant, one with a girl who seems young, maybe a teenager, and one with an older lady, maybe in the late…

This story begins in Moulmain, in lower Burma. The author speaks about his experiences while he was working as a police officer. In this time, Orwell was a young inexperienced soldier. He was in that place to protect the Queen’s interests. He had to do unethical things that made conflicts himself. When he mentions that he killed an elephant I feel his pangs of conscience. The elephant destroyed a village before it died. The villagers were furious about all the mess and Orwell was called to restore the order before anything, or anyone, was hurt. While this adventure runs, he decided to kill the animal because he thought that was the best. He needed to show solidarity among the villagers as a man of authority.…

The truth of the accounts that took place December 16, 1773, a day remembered by Americans as The Boston Tea Party, is one that is disputed. It seems as though there is a basic story of American patriots dressed as Indians, carrying tomahawks and hatchets boarding three ships in the Boston Harbor and throwing overboard over 300 cargo containers full of British East-Indian Company tea that was sent by England to tax the colonies without agreement. These acts were carried out without damage to any other goods aboard or the vessels themselves, and without anyone being harshly injured.…

As we move into analysis, we are looking to draw from various other sources and ask “questions about the assumptions underlying our interpretations” (Boss, p. 33). 1. John Merrick is a kind, but shy spirit. He really just wants a friend that stays around and a place to call home. His self-esteem is really low, and we can be sure of this because whenever John goes out in public he wears a giant cloak, a sleeve to cover his right arm, and a hood to cover his head and face. We also know he has low self-esteem because he doesn’t look or like to look at himself in the mirror. John seems fairly religious not only because he has read the Bible, but he also made a model of a church that meant a lot to him. Merrick is able to do more than anyone believes at first. In the beginning, no one really thinks he can think for himself. Later, after John and Mr. Carr Gomm met each other and John didn’t make the impression that he knows Mr. Treves was hoping for, Mr. Merrick starts reciting Psalms 23 that Treves didn’t teach him. From that point on, Carr Gomm and Treves know Merrick is able to think for himself. John is a huge romantic and very much enjoyed the moment he had with Mrs. Kendall when she called him a Romeo.…
