The Elf On The Shelf By Dr. David Kyle Johnson
Being stalked, being watched by unseen eyes, knowing there are consequences for any preceived wrong action taken. It is enough to make anybody go insane with paranoia. People do not know how to escape its gaze; the gaze of the ever watchful Elf on the Shelf. In “Let's Bench The Elf on the Shelf: Is the Elf on The Shelf a dangerous parental crutch?” written by Dr. David Kyle Johnson, he makes a clear argument for why such a toy should never be exploited on children. Accordingly, some of the numerous reasons for why it should be avoided are that it hinders children's abilities in seeing reality along with injuring their trust of their parents, scarring them in the process. In part, the Elf on the Shelf is just another Santa Claus; another mythological …show more content…
First question that crosses the child's mind once they find out: “What else are my parents lying about?” and second, “Did I really have to go through some of the horrendous things that such lying caused?” For example, the Easter Bunny. Some children are afraid to go see that guy at the mall. My parents, for one, scarred me for life from their lying when it comes to the Easter Bunny. It started when my mom was cleaning my ears with a q-tip and looked at the tip of it to see it was orange. She said they were carrots! Naturally by conclusion, I believed the Easter Bunny would come in the house on Easter and eat my ears. Finding out the bunny was not real cleared my anxiety, replacing it with relief. After all that, would anybody seriously trust their parents anymore? No, they would be scared to death! In short, it is in the best interest of future generations that the Elf on the Shelf not be used, eliminating more severe scarring and trust issues children have with their

In the essay "How Do You Know It's Good?" by Marya Mannes, she explains how the individuals judgement is the key to appreciating art. How you see the piece of art is how you should determine if it is good or bad. Not how the critics judge it. The essay focuses on how society is getting tricked by the critics for: "mastering the art of saying nothing with exquisite complexity". As someone that does not know a lot about art can get misled into thinking a certain piece is good when it is not. Her idea of fixing this is to get the public more involved with the artists. If the public has higher expectations, the better the performance the artists will…

Combatting food deserts is not an easy task, however that does not stop some communities and its members from bringing urban agriculture to life. According to a local community member, a food desert is a geographic area where affordable and nutritious foods are difficult to obtain, particularly for those without access to a car. Food deserts can often be located in rural and urban neighborhoods where access to affordable, healthy food options, such as fruits and vegetables are limited or non-existent because grocery stores are too far away. The Seedfolk Store is a business incubation under the supervision of ProsperRochester, Inc, a non-profit community engagement organization in the Southwest area.…

Tobolowsky’s article echoes thoughts and feelings about Santa, fears about life, and general doubts that are common to almost every child at some point in his or her life. Stephen describes childhood events and his own propensity toward fear and doubt in a frank and humorous manner that reminds me of Ralphie’s narration in A Christmas Story. Underneath the humor, however, there exists the real torment of doubt and fear that Stephen experiences, fear of the dark, fear of strange noises at night, fear of monsters living in his bedroom. While these fears simply frustrate his well-intentioned parents, they drive Stephen to create remedies of his own to allay his fears. However,…

To belong is to fit in, or to be rightly placed in a specified position or environment. The idea of belonging is a dynamic and an essential aspect of human life which can come through, due to the connections made with the concepts of identity, place, relationships, acceptance and understanding to oneself and other people. These aspects of belonging are demonstrated through the free verse novel, ‘The Simple Gift’ by Steven Herrick, and the fairy tale of ‘The Ugly Duckling’ by Hans Christian Anderson.…

"How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" is a popular children's story intended for young boys and girls under the age of ten. The book features a green, irritable, displeased, cave-dwelling creature who lives atop a mountain in a fantasy world. The Grinch, along with his pet dog, observes from their cavernous home, the Christmas festivities of the neighboring town of Whoville. After 53 years, the creature chooses to finally put an end to the Who's Christmas celebrations, and make Christmas not come. The Grinch decides that in order to suppress the annoying holiday cheer of the Who's, he must sneak into all of their houses and steal their Christmas paraphernalia. He fashions a Santa-like jacket and hat and affixes a branch to the head of Max the dog, and sets off to Whoville to rid the surrounding areas of happiness and joy.…

Hey Virginia, there is more than just a Santa Claus. Nowadays, Americans have either forgotten or ignored Christmas traditions put in place over 1500 years ago. They would rather indulge in the gifts and shopping to please their family than sit back and enjoy the holiday. This new mindset has led Christmas, Hanukkah, and other seasonal festivals to lose their religious intent through the past centuries by the hands of both people and markets. The original purpose of Christmas, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, has been trampled and overshadowed by a marketeer’s interpretation of how to represent the holiday. Santa and snowmen have become the faces of Christmas, instead of the Son…

Throughout America’s communities today, the quality of schooling varies from school to school. In the book Our Kids the author, Robert Putnam, believes that the increased gap between the wealthy and poor is what causes the differences in school quality and opportunities for the students (Putnam, 2015). Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing two of today’s youth, Josh and Erin. Their names have been changed for the sake of anonymity. Josh is a 17-year-old student at Shawnee Mission East High School, in Prairie Village, Kansas.…

American families derive pleasure in viewing Christmas movies, and the hyperbolized plots give children and adolescents, the most influential individuals in society, unreasonable expectations, which affect their practicality. According to the website, “Problems with Christmas Curriculum,” published by Steven A. Gelb, the standard formula used to create the plot of hundreds of holiday movies, shows the same fantasized version of Christmas, which makes one’s choice of how they would want their holiday to take place, difficult. Although several individuals would like the reality of a holiday to more closely resemble the television-version, visual settings, reasons for celebrating, and the holiday’s ending make individual unrealistically expect a more romanticized version of Christmas.…

Lying is something that people do in their daily lives, whether they choose to admit or not is their decision. It has become normal for children as well as adults to lie in their lives to avoid saying something they do not want to. Adults do it sometimes when they want to keep their children happy and avoid them from being sad if parents tell them the truth. Now children do lie quite more than adults for their own reasons. The real question is why do children lie? Children lie often because they think the truth hurts people’s feelings and they are afraid of telling the truth.…
