In “The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano”, Equiano describes the horrible conditions slaves were forced to endure on the voyage to the new world. The Allegory of the Cave is about a group of people who have lived in a cave since their childhood. These people not only live in this cave, but they are also chained and made to face a blank wall. Even their heads are shackled such that they cannot look behind them or at the sides. On the blank wall in front of them, a fire that is behind them projects shadows of objects that are passing behind them. When one of them is released to the outside world, the people who remain in the cave do not believe the version of the story concerning the reality of the shadows they have spent the whole of their lives watching and analyzing.…

The second narrative by Equiano also uses observational information, focuses on his point of view, and makes the narrative a reflective passage so he can portray his experience of becoming a slave. Equiano uses observational information to give the audience an image of what it looked like being on the slave ship, “I fell motionless on the deck” (ln 15-16), this explicates that he was fearful, shocked, and anguish from seeing other people chained up. Equiano makes the narrative focus on one event to give a more emphasis on his experience on the ship “the crew watched us very closely who were not chained down to the deck”(ln44-45). The concluding…

The first stage of the excerpt, which is characterized by chained and confined people, is a metaphor representing the infant and child ages of humans. Like the confined people, children are not allowed to wander freely outside of their home and must stay close to their parent's watchful eye. Those living in the underground den have their heads positioned in a way that they must not view a fire blazing behind them. The heads of the people only see the shadows cast by the fire and objects passing by behind them and they can only guess as to the actual physicality of the object. This also is very similar to children who are curious about objects around them. Although children do not understand complex objects, they do want to know the purpose and function of the object. The mentalities of the people in the cave and of children are 100% subjective and are trapped in their own ignorance: "To them, I said, the truth would be literally nothing but the shadows of the images."(5) Totally emerged in isolation and without experience, those in the den have no idea as to what the true nature of the shadow is. Their only truth is the shadow and they cannot learn the real meaning behind the shadow unless set free.…

I am gripped by fear at the sudden noise. Curse this eye! I can’t see anything in the blackness of this room with two good eyes, much less one. I’m too scared to move. The most profound flashback that portrays his childhood fear is found at the 4 minute 35 second mark - the boy is in bed and his room is dark. Viewers are shown into the mind of the boy as he tries to fall asleep one night, but he cannot because he is terrified. The narrator ponders the chances of forced entry into his room by a bear or gypsy as things in the room twist and turn – unanimated objects come to life. The narration goes on to explain that “if I screamed for help, and the winds changed, my face would freeze; rendering me mute”. So the fear in this flashback does not come from any dramatic scream, but from the image of a child’s face peeking out from pulled-up blankets and wide eyes that silently turn in terror to watch…

Plato’s Allegory of the Cave starts in a world where men are strapped to the hard floor in a sitting position. The reader is told “[t]hey’ve been there since childhood, fixed in the same place, with their necks and legs fettered, able to see only in front of them.” This deprivation of movement does not allow the cave dwellers to turn their heads, thus giving them the inability to grasp what exists around them. The only things the dwellers can see are the images of shadows projected by inanimate objects behind their backs. Since shadows are all they observe, shadows are all they know, symbolizing the realm of deception in which they live in. In order to correct this delusion, a philosopher must step into the cave and rule over the cave dwellers, liberating them of all evils.…
